Elevated Casual Spring Tops That Make Getting Dressed Easier

If you’ve been feeling stuck in a t-shirt rut but don’t want to feel overdressed, elevated casual tops are the easiest fix.

Elevated casual tops instantly make your outfits look more put together without adding effort. They’re a step above a t-shirt but still casual, so you feel a little more pulled together and confident, whether you’re at school pickup or grabbing dinner with a friend.

Today I’m breaking down a few types of elevated casual spring tops that are worth having in your wardrobe, along with some really good options you can check out!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

1. Elevated T-Shirts (Better Than Basic Tees)

Not all t-shirts are created equal. Having a few t-shirts that are a step above a basic tee makes it so much easier to look put together without trying harder. These are perfect for everyday outfits, but they can also be dressed up more than you might think!

This blue and white striped tee is a great example. It’s really, really soft, fairly thick, and super stretchy, so it’s extremely comfortable but still looks polished. The stripes add just enough interest so you don’t feel like you’re wearing something plain, and it gives your outfit more style — without you doing anything extra!

I paired it with white wide leg trousers above for a more elevated look, and I love how clean and polished it feels. But you could totally wear it with jeans and sneakers for everyday.

You can see all the colors HERE. I’m wearing size S.

2. Lightweight Button-Ups (Easy but Polished)

Lightweight button-ups are one of my favorite types of elevated casual tops because they sit perfectly between casual and polished.

In the photos below I’m showing the same top in two different colorways. This top is 55% linen and 45% rayon, so it’s lightweight with an airy feel but drapes nicely. It’s easy to throw on, breathable, and doesn’t feel stiff or fussy. See all the colorways HERE. I’m wearing size S.

Pink & White Stripe

This color is so cute for spring, and it’s one of those pieces that feels a little more fun while being really versatile. It goes with so many different bottoms, from jeans like these to a grey wash jean to white wide leg pants, and more!

Here I paired it with my Quince Bella wide leg jeans in a medium wash. If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I LOVE these jeans. I have them in five colors. They’re really soft, stretchy, and easy to wear, but they still look structured and polished, which is the best of both worlds! Check them out HERE. I’m wearing size 6/28.

White Version

It’s also really helpful to have a white top like this that’s more elevated than a basic tee. This is one of those pieces that you might underestimate, but it’s super duper versatile and easy to style. You’ll wear it with everything!

I’m sharing two outfits with it. First, I paired it again with the Quince wide leg jeans for a clean, minimal look that still feels really put together. I love how effortlessly pulled together this is!

And second, I also styled it with these wide leg linen pants from Athleta in a light olive color to show how easily it transitions into summer. This outfit feels super lightweight and easy, but still polished. Great for summer! Find them HERE. I’m wearing size XS — I sized down as size S felt too voluminous around my hips.

By the way, I finished off this outfit with these gold Croc sandals that I recently shared in emails — PMTers were LOVING them last year, saying they’re the most comfortable sandals they’ve worn. They are indeed comfortable! Also, a metallic sandal (especially gold) is a neutral, so it goes with everything and adds just enough polish to really take an outfit up a notch. Check them out HERE. I’m wearing size 8.

3. Neutral Tops with Details (Effortless Interest)

This is one of the easiest ways to elevate your outfits without trying harder. A neutral top with some kind of detail, like texture, cutouts, or interesting sleeves, adds instant style while still being super wearable.

This white eyelet top is such a great example. It’s 100% cotton, so it’s breathable and comfortable, but the eyelet and cutout details give it that extra something that makes your outfit feel more styled. It’s one of those pieces you can throw on and just know your outfit will look good. Find it HERE. I’m wearing size S.

Note: It’s a TAD long on me to wear untucked, but I know it’ll be great for a lot of you — my torso is shorter than average!

I paired it with the Quince medium wash wide leg jeans again (told you I love them), and it just works. Casual but pulled together.

Of course, you can also go for the short sleeve button up in white that I shared earlier!

4. Pop-of-Color Elevated Tops

If your wardrobe leans more neutral, adding a pop-of-color top like this can make a big difference. It brings life to your wardrobe and outfits without requiring any extra effort.

This short sleeve button-up is made of a 100% cotton gauze fabric, so it’s lightweight and comfortable. The texture gives it a slightly elevated feel, even though it’s still very easy to wear. I’m wearing it here with these jeans from my favorite brand Wit & Wisdom.

The color is kind of an orangey-pink-ish-red tone — bright, fun, and perfect for spring and summer! Even if you don’t go for this exact color, having some kind of color like this in your wardrobe can really help break up neutrals and add interest. You can see all the colors HERE. I’m wearing size XS.

5. Elevated Blouse-Feel Tops (Casual to Work)

I can’t quite describe the fabric of this top, but it’s a step above a cotton/gauzy/linen top yet not as dressy as a blouse. Really, it’s the PERFECT in-betweener and so, SO versatile. You can wear it with slacks and throw a blazer over it for work, but you can also wear it with jeans and not feel overdressed.

I’m showing it in two versions:

  • a blue floral print
  • and a solid navy

The floral version is a great example of a print that adds interest without being overwhelming, and it pairs really nicely with denim.

Fit note: the torso is more fitted and slightly narrow at the bottom. It’s not uncomfortable, but if you have curvier hips (like me), it works best worn fully tucked in. If worn untucked, it’ll look awkward around the hips. I would personally hem it if I wanted to wear it untucked.

You can see all the colorways HERE. I’m wearing size XS.
