Summer has always been a tricky season to dress for, but it can feel especially tricky once you hit your 40s. You want to stay cool and comfortable in the heat, but you also want to look polished, modern, and put together — all while not looking like you’re trying too hard and not like you’ve given up either. Aghhh, so many things! Plus, as I continue into my 40s (I’m 42 at the moment), my body just feels different, and things that I liked to wear in my 30s aren’t cutting it anymore.

If you’re looking for casual summer outfits for over 40 that feel comfortable, modern, and easy to wear, you don’t have to follow every trend or try to squeeze into the outfits that no longer work. With a few right pieces and some simple outfit ideas, you can feel confident and stylish this summer.

Today I’ll talk about the key building blocks for summer outfits over 40, how to keep casual outfits polished (without feeling overdone), and I’ll share some easy outfit ideas you can try right away.

Why Dressing Casually Over 40 Feels Different (and How to Nail It)

In your 40s, your lifestyle, body, and preferences often shift. You may need outfits that can take you from school drop-offs to work calls, to weekend get-togethers, to your kids’ extracurricular activities where you’ll be chatting with other parents — all while feeling good in changing temperatures and on changing bodies. 🤪

Speaking of changing bodies, one of the most important things is choosing clothes with a little structure. When I say “structure,” I don’t mean stiff or stuffy pieces (unless that’s your style!). You know I love clothes that are soft, stretchy, and COMFORTABLE, but they still need to have shape. Pieces made from thin, slinky fabrics that lack any form don’t create that polished, effortless look we’re after.

If you want that easy-but-put-together vibe, your summer wardrobe needs items that hold some shape and provide a bit of structure while still feeling breezy and soft. I’ll show several examples in the 11 outfits below — all of which balance comfort, breathability, and polish.

Key Pieces for Casual Summer Outfits Over 40

A few well-chosen staples make putting together casual summer outfits much easier. Look for pieces that mix and match, suit your lifestyle, and can be dressed up or down. And of course, aim for items with structure or subtle details that make them look elevated rather than basic.

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

11 Casual Summer Outfits for Over 40 (and Why They Work)

1. T-Shirt + Pleated Shorts

Let’s start with how to dress up a super basic combo of a plain t-shirt + plain shorts. As I get further into my 40s, I feel more and more of a need for even my basic outfits to look a little more elevated, a little more sophisticated. So, to make an outfit with a plain tee and plain shorts look more sophisticated, go for pleated shorts or some other detail that elevates it, like a gold button or a belt. Details instantly make your outfit more stylish! And those types of details, while small, make a HUGE difference in making basics look not-so-basic.

These shorts have elastic in the waistband, so they’re comfortable, too!

➡️ Shop my tee. Wearing size M.

2. Denim Shorts + Better-Than-Basic Top

Along the lines of making basic outfits a little more chic, a simple way to pull together denim shorts and a basic top is to make sure your top looks polished with clean lines and beyond-basic characteristics like extended shoulders. The top I’m wearing here is a sweater, and it’s SO GOOD, plus it’s affordable! This sweater looks really, really polished and will transition into super easy outfits come fall. Find it HERE. I’m wearing size S.

The shorts I’m wearing are out of stock, but you can check out a similar pair HERE.

3. Open Knit Top + Denim Shorts

Another option to make denim shorts outfits look a little more elevated is to pair them with a nicer casual top with details, like a sweater tank. This style of tank is adorable and full of style, not to mention it’s short enough to not have to tuck! 🙌 Find a similar one HERE.

4. Utility Denim Shorts + Better-Than-Basic Tee

Another way to make denim shorts more stylish and sophisticated is to opt for utility denim shorts, or shorts with some other eye-catching details! With these shorts, the cinched waist gives you shape, and the pockets add visual interest, elevating your overall style. Plus, these are comfy! Grab them HERE. Wearing size S.

The shorts themselves will step up all of your denim shorts outfits, but to take it up another notch, you can pair them with an elevated tee like this one.

5. Belted Dress

Gotta love a one-and-done piece! Years ago, I loved love swing dresses in this drapey, pajama-like fabric. But like I’ve mentioned, as I’ve gotten into my 40s, I’ve craved more structure in my outfits. So, a dress in this same comfy pajama-like fabric, but that has a belt to offer more structure, makes me feel more pulled together.

This dress is super duper comfortable, with soft and stretchy fabric that feels like pajamas. The belted waist gives you structure and shape, even in a piece that’s really stretchy and comfy. You can find it HERE. There’s also a short sleeve version HERE. I wear size S in both.

6. Dress

This is another option for a super comfortable, one-and-done outfit. This dress feels like pajamas, but it doesn’t look totally shapeless thanks to its relaxed empire waist and tiers at the bottom. I’ve owned this for a few years and continue to wear it each summer! Comes in TONS of colorways, HERE. I wear size S.

To make this outfit look pulled together, be sure to pair it with jewelry and streamlined sandals!

7. Linen Tank + Linen Pants

To look polished in linen, be sure to choose linen pieces that have and hold structure. Lots of linen pieces can get misshapen, which ends up looking messy. That’s the opposite of polished!

These Quince pants and Amazon tank keep their structure, even though they are soft and breathable. The tank is especially flowy but looks structured. Whether you wear these specific pieces or something else, be sure that they look structured if you want to look pulled together!

8. Printed Pants + Tee or Tank

An outfit with printed pants automatically looks stylish! They’re just as easy to wear as plain pants, but they make it look like you tried way harder.

9. Flowy Pants + Gauzy Top

This combo makes such a great summer outfit if you’re over 40. It’s soooo breezy and breathable, thanks to the fabrics of the pieces, but it looks really polished and classy.

These pants are INCREDIBLY soft and comfortable with a satiny feel, and they’re so, so breathable and keep you cool, but they look so good. The waistband is fully elastic, which makes them extra comfortable. They DO NOT WRINKLE, which is even better. And they don’t bag out, maintaining their shape all day, so you stay looking polished. They come in tons of colorways, HERE. I wear my regular size, but if these end up looking sloppy on you, I recommend trying a size down. I wear size S.

My top is no longer available, but any gauzy top like this will do. What really helps pull this outfit together is the texture and the details, like the buttons, collar, and rolled sleeves.

10. Flowy Pants + Blouse

This is another take on the outfit formula above, with a printed blouse. Same idea, totally different outfit — but the key principles still stand. Pants that fall with a clean line and a top that has extra details to give your outfit some style and oomph, elevating your whole look. Find a similar top HERE.

11. Lightweight Wide Leg Jeans + Gauze or Linen Top

On days that jeans are an option, my vote is usually for a wide leg with a flowy, flexible fabric for some airflow. These KUT From the Kloth ones are SOOO comfortable! Buttery soft and stretchy, but they hold their shape and create a clean line down the body for a polished look. Find them HERE. I’m wearing size 4 and recommend a size down.

One thing that’s super important in looking good in wide leg jeans is to make sure you nail your fit points. I walk you through this in DETAIL in my post How to Look Good in Wide Leg Jeans – 4 Tips for Finding the Right Pair. If you haven’t read that yet or need a refresher, please head over there — I consider it PMT required reading at this point! 😄

Bringing It All Together

All in all, to look polished in summer outfits for over 40, the most important things to look for are pieces with structure that are also made with breathable fabrics, pieces that have special details to make them look more elevated, and pieces that create clean lines down the body so that they look more polished.

Being more intentional about these elements will help you feel pulled together while staying comfortable and cool.

Take these principles and use them in your outfits throughout the remainder of the season. And, copy these outfit formulas above to make getting dressed easy through the back to school rush. I hope this helps you end the season strong, feeling confident!
