Black wide leg linen pants might be the most versatile thing you can add to your summer wardrobe — and yet they’re also the pants that might make you go, “Okay but… what do I actually wear with these?”
You have the pants (or you’re thinking about getting them). You know they’re supposed to be easy and breezy and effortless. But then you stand in front of your closet and realize you’re not totally sure what tops work, why some combinations look polished while others just feel meh, or you simply can’t figure out what to wear with black linen pants that actually looks good.
That’s exactly what this post is for! I’m sharing 14 outfits with black wide leg linen pants, along with the reasoning behind how to make each one work so you can recreate these looks AND use that knowledge to find even more combinations from your own closet. 👏
Before We Get to the Outfits
Before we talk outfits, here are some SUPER IMPORTANT things that will make a big difference in how your black wide leg linen pants look — and how much you actually reach for them!
Fit
Before anything else — fit. “If you don’t have fit, you don’t have style.” — famous words from Stacy and Clinton from What Not to Wear. If your wide leg linen pants don’t fit well, they’ll look sloppy, and your whole outfit won’t work, no matter how cute the outfit you’re copying is.
If you feel like you look awkwardly wider in wide leg linen pants, this tip is ESPECIALLY important for you: Make sure the pants hug your booty and hips, and then fall straight down from just under your hip. Go High Rise
High rise is your best friend with wide leg pants. Here’s why: a higher rise gives you extra length in the leg line, which visually balances the extra width that the wide leg adds. The result is a silhouette that looks long and proportioned rather than wide and squat. Look for a pair that hits at your natural waist, which is the part of your torso that bends when you bend to the side.

Silhouette Formulas
Wide leg pants have one styling rule that matters more than anything else: define your waist. Because the leg opening is so wide, you need to create a visual break at the right spot or else the proportions can feel off. This doesn’t mean you have to wear figure-hugging tops — don’t worry!
There are two formulas that you can rely on:
- Top fully tucked in. A top that’s fully tucked creates a defined waistline, which prevents you from looking shapeless. This works especially well for tops that are flowy or drapey because tucking adds the structure the outfit needs.
- Structured top at the 1/3 point down your body. Remember I promised that you can define your waist without having to wear figure-hugging tops. Here it is. If you’re wearing a top untucked, it should hit right around the top third of your body, measured from shoulder to floor. Think cropped or slightly cropped. And the top would ideally have some structure to it. A little structure on top balances all that relaxed fabric on the bottom, even if it’s just a little, like a structured tee or a woven blouse — I’ll show you examples when we get to outfits below.
Additional silhouette formula:
In case you fully tuck a top but still feel shapeless or frumpy, try this formula: fitted + flowy. Go with a more fitted top to balance the flowiness of wide leg linen pants.
Color & Styling
Many things technically go with black and won’t clash. But I’m guessing you don’t want outfits that just go; you want outfits that look great! Outfits that look polished and pulled together. Here’s how to get there:
Choose colors that create contrast. Black is a strong, heavy anchor color. If everything else in the outfit is low-contrast or visually quiet, the whole look can fall flat even if the individual pieces are cute. Choose colors that pop away from the black and make the outfit feel interesting, like:
- White or cream— classic high-contrast option, always sharp
- Tan and camel — softer contrast but really cohesive; black and tan is such an underrated combo!
- Olive — earthy and grounded, works beautifully with black
What I’d skip: colors that are too close in depth to black, like navy, a super dark grey, or a super dark brown. They might not create enough contrast to make the outfit feel dynamic.
Add visual interest with your top, accessories, and shoes. Because the pants are simple — solid black, relaxed fit — intentionally add more personality with other elements of your outfit.
A top with some kind of detail goes a long way. Select tops that have a subtle texture, an interesting neckline, a pattern, some structure, or even just a color that pops well from black. Or wear earrings with a print or with a fun texture, like raffia. The details don’t need to be loud. They just need to give the eye somewhere to go.
I’ll point these out as we go through each outfit below so you can see exactly how it plays out.
A Note on Linen Pants
Not all black linen pants are created equal. Most linen pants have a very relaxed, casual look — great for weekends, errands, and laid-back summer days. But there are also a lot of options available now that are more polished and structured, with a cleaner drape that works for the office and more elevated outfits. I’ll share both kinds in the pants roundup at the bottom of this post, so you can find the right fit for how you actually want to wear them.
And, real talk from me: If I’m 100% honest…I actually prefer other types of lightweight summer pants over linen. 😅 Haha! I know, I know. Hear me out, though!
Linen has a reputation for being the breathable summer fabric, but in my experience, there are other options out there that are SO MUCH softer, more comfortable, even MORE breathable, and not AT ALL scratchy. (Like, the PMT beloved Playa Pants, which are super breathable and so comfortable!)
Now, linen is still a good option! And realistically, there’s a huge range of linen pants out there. Some are better than others; more breathable than others. But truthfully, if I’m reaching for wide leg summer pants, I have about 10 other pairs I’d grab before my linen ones. 😄 I’ll share some options later in this post — I feel like it’s my duty to get you in the know!
The good news is that whichever fabric you choose, these outfits and formulas will work with them. You’re all good either way, so let’s get to the outfits!
Black Linen Pants Outfits
I’m going to share a lot of outfits to give you plenty of ideas for what to wear with black linen pants. With each one, I’ll share the outfit formula behind it. Outfit formulas are the combination of silhouette, color, and styling elements that make an outfit work. Once you understand the formula, you’re not just copying a look — you can use that same formula to pull together your own outfit combinations from what’s already in your closet.

Casual Wide Leg Black Linen Pants Outfits
Below I’m sharing a range of outfits with black wide leg linen pants, from super casual to a little more elevated. With each one, I’ll share the outfit formula so you can use the same logic to find combinations from your own closet.
1. Embroidered or Eyelet White Top + Colored Earrings
White and black is a blank canvas, which means you can add almost any color as an accent to bring the outfit to life. The embroidery on this top keeps it from feeling too basic, and the aqua earrings give the whole look its final pop.
This top is loose but hits right at the 1/3 point, so it works untucked without looking shapeless. 👏 (LOVE this top, BTW.)

2. White Gauze Top + Cognac Accessories
You don’t need color to make an outfit feel dynamic. Black, white, and cognac is a fantastic neutral palette that has depth without being loud. The cognac cutout earrings are doing most of the work here!
Since this top is relaxed and flowy, I’m tucking it all the way in for a more defined waistline.

3. Colored Graphic Tee + Lifestyle Sneakers
A cobalt blue graphic tee is so fun with black wide leg linen pants! The color creates contrast that helps the outfit pop, and the graphic adds personality and visual interest. Opt for sneakers over sandals to make this your casual summer go-to for time with kids or running a quick errand.

Red is having a major moment this summer, and it works really well as an accent to white + black. You can add it in smaller pops, like with sneakers or earrings, or you can make a big splash with a red layer!

5. Black Linen Tank + Gold Accessories
Black on black works, especially since linen sets are totally in right now! BUT, it needs something to bring it to life. Opt for gold or silver accessories to add just enough polish while keeping the whole outfit simple. I’ve also been loving pairing my black Electric Picks Icon necklace with black tops for a subtle, but significant, pop. Want something more unexpected? Swap in leopard print earrings or sandals instead.
This tank hits above the 1/3 point and has enough structure to wear untucked. Easy and effortlessly stylish. 🙌🏽

6. Green Tank + Spotted Earrings
A ribbed tank brings texture to an otherwise simple outfit, and texture is what gives it that little something extra. Bring in a color like green for contrast against the black, then let your earrings or sandals (or both!) add the print. Gold hoops or a simple necklace work just as well if you want to keep things quieter.
You can also add a soft, breezy gauze button up as a light layer if needed. I love this one — so comfy, and it’s not too big or overwhelming.

A white ribbed tank with black wide leg linen pants is a simple, classic combination, and the ribbing adds texture to keep it interesting. If the weather calls for a layer, this denim jacket is a great option. This one is actually made of Tencel lyocell fabric, so it has the look of a denim jacket but is much more comfortable in warmer weather — thin and breathable with an easygoing drape. 😅

Printed Tops With Black: The Easiest Outfit Formula
The next four outfits all follow the same strategy, and once you see it, you’ll use it all the time: Wear a printed top that has black in it. The black in the print ties right into your black linen pants, making the whole outfit feel cohesive and intentional with pretty much zero effort. Then pull one color from the print and repeat it in your earrings or shoes to bring the look together even more. The print does all the work for you!
8. Black and Red Floral Top + Red Earrings
This floral top has red, black, and white in the print, so it works seamlessly with black pants because of that black in the pattern. Pulling the red out into the earrings takes it one step further. It’s SUCH an easy strategy that makes the outfit look way more intentional than the time it took to put it together!

I fully tucked this one in to keep the silhouette clean and avoid looking shapeless. Throwing the denim jacket on top adds another layer of casual cool. Same idea as the striped tee, but this cream and black striped sweater is short enough that you don’t even need to tuck it, which makes it SO effortless to wear! Just throw it on and go. Gold accessories finish it off perfectly.

12. Brown and Black Printed Tank + Sandals
Another great example of the printed-top-with-black formula, this time in a neutral brown with black print. The top goes with the black pants seamlessly. This outfit is a great reminder that this formula works beyond stripes and florals — any print with black in it will do the trick.
By the way, if you’re going to do brown with black, make sure the brown is distinct from the black, as in not too dark. That way, it pops from the black, creates contrast, and makes your outfit more appealing!

Elevated Black Linen Pants Outfits for Work
The outfits above are mostly casual or elevated casual, which is where most black wide leg linen pants live. But if you want to wear this look to work or dress it up a little more, swap casual drawstring pants for nicer linen pants, like the ones below! These last two outfits are styled with a pair of KUT from the Kloth linen pants that have a dressier drape and a more streamlined, polished look than your average linen pant. It’s the same wide leg silhouette, just elevated. Pair them with nicer shoes and a more refined top, and you have an outfit that works in an office without feeling stiff or overdressed.
13. Burgundy Sweater Shell + Dressy Pants
Burgundy and black is such a good combination, and there’s no reason to limit it to the fall season. This sweater shell has a refined, polished look that works really well for the office. While it’s definitely short enough to wear untucked, it’s fitted, so I’m tucking it in for a cleaner silhouette from the side — otherwise the waistband underneath makes it look lumpy. I added heels for a dressier vibe, but you can wear any pair of work-appropriate flats as well!
