How to Fix 8 of the Most Common Summer Style Struggles

How to Fix 8 of the Most Common Summer Style Struggles + summer style fixes + putting me together

Wish summer style felt easier? Every year I hear the same struggles from women — sweaty thighs chafing, not wanting to show arms, feeling like a blob, or just being way too hot in clothes.

I want you to feel awesome during the summer, so today I’m sharing 8 of my go-to summer style fixes that make it easier to stay comfortable, confident, and pulled together when the temps suck. 😅 Whether it’s wide leg pants that never seem to fit right, jersey dresses that cling in the wrong places, or outfits that just feel shapeless, I have practical summer style tips that I hope help!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually wear size S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

8 Summer Style Fixes Every Woman Over 40 Should Know

1. For Thigh Rub: Thigh Society Shorts or Chafing Stick

If your thighs rub together when wearing skirts or dresses, you’re not alone! Want a go-to solution? Thigh Society shorts. PMT stylist Courtney has been recommending these inside the PMT Style Club, and members have been loving them! They prevent thigh chafing AND they’re said to be super duper comfortable, breathable, and come in different lengths and colors.

Another option is to use a chafing stick, like Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick. Rub it on your thighs, and it’ll create a barrier between the parts of your thighs that touch to minimize chafing.

2. Don’t Like Showing Your Arms and Avoid Tank Tops? Try These Sleeves

Don’t love showing your arms in summer? Wondering what to wear when you don’t want to show your arms? Tops with extended shoulders are your secret weapon. They’re almost like a tank top, allowing your arms to breathe, but they offer more coverage!

Another option is a top with loose flutter sleeves, like THIS one. The sleeves offer even more coverage than extended shoulders, but they are loose and flap around, so they allow lots of airflow.

Here are a few tops with extended shoulders or loose flutter sleeves that you can try:

3. Midi Skirts Feel Off? Here’s How to Make Them Work

Midi skirts are popular these days, but they can be tricky! When the length is off, they can feel frumpy. Let’s talk through a few super-important midi skirt styling tips:

First, instead of wearing midi skirts that hit mid-calf, cutting straight across the wider part of your calf, aim for skirts that hit at the bottom of your calf where your calf starts to narrow.

Also, if you have wider hips and feel like midi skirts look off, try skirts that have a flowy fabric and taper in under the hips a bit. This means the skirt will contour curves rather than tent out.

Last, you can also wear a nude heel. I know, I know… we love our flats! Just saying this is *a* tool in your style toolbox. It elongates your leg line, which helps a ton with midi skirts. You don’t have to use this option, but it is an option!

If you still don’t like how midi skirts look, go for skirts that hit just above your knees instead — no prob!

Also, wear Thigh Society shorts underneath to prevent chafing. They also smooth over lumps and bumps when wearing thinner fabrics.

4. Think Wide Leg Pants Don’t Work for You? Look for This

You can’t escape flowy wide leg pants in the summer, but so many women feel frumpy in them and swear they can’t wear them. The truth? It’s rarely your body that’s the problem; it’s the fit points.

If wide leg pants give you issues, especially if you have curvy hips (Pear and Hourglass shapes), there are three very important details you need to look for in wide leg pants. I wrote a whole post on how to look better in wide leg pants, HERE. It’s a must-read!

Above is an example of a pair of wide leg pants that doesn’t quite hit the mark (left) and a pair with a few key adjustments in fit, which overall looks much more polished (right). I detail it all in my wide leg pants fit guide! Head there to know exactly what to look for so you can feel your best in them!

5. Hot and Sticky Clothes? Wear My Favorite Breathable Fabrics

Listen. Some fabrics are HORRIBLE in the summer. Some are AMAZING. What to look for? Well, linen, cotton, and gauze are the popular ones… but they aren’t even my favorite ones! My favorite breathable summer fabrics are viscose, rayon, tencel, and lyocell. These are what Courtney and I reach for every year! They’re NOT itchy, and I often find them MORE breathable than linen and cotton.

Once I filled my closet with tops, pants, and dresses in those fabrics, I started LOVING my summer clothes more than I could ever have imagined! (And yes, I still wear cotton, linen, and gauze of course!)

The printed shirt above is rayon and sooo breathable. The dress is 80% viscose and breathes well. The white top is gauze (like this one) and super duper airy. The pants are rayon and nylon and are SO breathable and comfortable!!! I’m wearing size S in all the pieces, for reference.

The fabric I try to avoid in the summer? Polyester! It’s so suffocating. But I won’t lie… I kind of like wearing it in colder months for that reason! 😄

BTW, when I created the Summer Wardrobe & Outfit Guide, I tried to fill it with as many pieces in my favorite fabrics as possible. I didn’t want it to just be outfit ideas — I wanted it to be filled with pieces that are practical and wearable.

6. Strapless Bra Doesn’t Work? Try Nippies Instead

Sometimes even strapless bras aren’t good solutions, depending on the design of the garment you’re wearing. If that’s the case, try Nippies instead. These adhesive covers give easy coverage and stay put under open back tops and dresses — no adjusting required. I wore these for a full night of dancing, and they stayed on through all the sweat. 😅 (Obviously if you need more support, Nippies aren’t an option. But if they seem helpful to you, check them out!)

7. Jersey Dresses Clinging Too Much? Add a Lightweight Slip or Thigh Society Shorts

Jersey dresses are comfy but can cling in all the wrong places — especially in the back, exposing bumps and lumps. For a bit of help smoothing things out, wear a slip! A slip smooths everything out so you feel more confident and polished without adding bulk or heat. I love THIS style, of which I’ve owned in an identical version for years. The lace waistband lays flat against you, staying hidden and smooth at the waist under your dress. And, it’s under $15!

Another option is the Thigh Society shorts!

8. Feeling Like a Blob in Summer Clothes? Add Some Structure

If your outfit feels shapeless or makes you feel like a blob, try adding pieces with more structure. It might seem counterintuitive, but wearing loose, drapey clothes to “hide” things often makes you feel more like a blob. When you’re feeling blobby, what you actually need is the opposite — structure. Structure creates a visual framework that gives your outfit — and your body — more definition and shape.

By “structure,” I don’t mean super tailored, stuffy-looking pieces. You can wear pieces that have more structure but still look relaxed and effortless.

First, avoid pieces that are loosey-goosey and in a slinky, clingy fabric. Instead, look for garments that have a sturdier fabric and hold shape on their own. Again, that doesn’t mean stiff. Let’s look at some examples:

The first top is a lightweight sweater that’s super comfortable. It’s not stiff at all and has a relaxed fit that doesn’t cling, but it still holds its shape — unlike those ultra-thin, flowy tops that can feel a bit too floppy. You can find it HERE. I’m wearing size S.

The second top LOOKS structured and stiff, but it’s actually SO fluid and flowy. It provides structure but drapes and flows so comfortably. You can find this top HERE. I’m wearing size S.

Both outfits feature pants that are soft and drapey, but not so slouchy that they veer into pajama territory. The latter will enhance that blobby feeling, whereas these pants have just enough structure to them that they look polished.

Note that neither of these two tops require tucking! I specifically showed examples of providing shape and structure that do not include tucking so you KNOW you can do this even without drawing a lot of attention to your midsection. 🙌🏽

This dress is SUPER SOFT and pajama-like, but in the best way. It’s a bit thicker than those slinky, clingy fabrics that can make you feel blobby, and it has subtle structure thanks to the empire waistline and tiered hem. The waist isn’t tight or restrictive, but it gives just enough shape to keep the dress from feeling shapeless. You can find it in tons of colors HERE. It’s one of my faves! I’m wearing size S.

The second outfit features a tank similar to the ones above, paired with soft gauzy shorts. On their own, these kinds of shorts can lack structure and feel too shapeless. But when you pair them with a top that has a little more structure, the whole outfit instantly feels more pulled together.

For the first outfit, a gauzy top like this is gauzy and SO comfortable and SO breathable! But, cuffed sleeves and buttons add details that give the garment structure, which looks more polished. The pants are INCREDIBLY comfortable! Fully elastic waistband, satiny smooth fabric, and so, so breathable. They legit feel like pajamas (I’ve almost slept in them on a trip when I was too hot in my regular pajamas). But thanks to the fabric and detailed waistband, they still have structure and shape. Fully tucking the top also adds more definition. Find my pants HERE. I’m wearing size S.

The second outfit is slightly dressier, but the top is so, so breathable and easy to wear. The fabric isn’t slinky or clingy and has more structure. I also fully tucked the top to give the outfit more shape. You can find my top HERE (wearing size S) and my shorts HERE (wearing size 6).

Remember, if tucking isn’t your thing, I shared several options above that provide structure without needing to tuck!

Small Things Can Make a Big Difference

I know summer style can be frustrating or uncomfortable, but hopefully these summer style fixes can make it better for you! A few smart tweaks, like choosing the right fabrics, adding a little structure, and finding pieces that actually work for your body, can make a huge difference in how you feel.

Hopefully, this post gave you some practical tools you can try out. And remember, not everything will work for everyone, but there’s always something worth experimenting with. You deserve to feel confident, comfortable, and pulled together — even when it’s blazing hot outside. ☀️
