What to Wear in the Fall When It’s Hot

fall outfits for hot weather + What to Wear In the Fall When It’s Hot + putting me together + tips and outfit ideas for what to wear in the fall when its hot

If your area is anything like mine, fall weather is still hot! One of the most common questions I get this time of year is what to wear in the fall when it’s hot. You’re ready to shift out of summer mode and into fall — and you want your outfits to follow — but the weather hasn’t quite gotten the memo. So let’s talk! Today I’m sharing tips for styling fall outfits for hot weather along with examples of warm-weather fall outfits to help you out.

Before we dive in, let me just say this: you can and should wear whatever you want. If you’re happy rocking bright, summery outfits in October, do it! I lived in San Diego for 20 years, and plenty of people wore shorts, t-shirts, and sandals year-round without anyone batting an eye. But if you’re feeling that internal pull for a change of pace and want your outfits to reflect the shift into fall, I totally get that, too. And if that’s where you’re at, keep reading, my friend!

The Most Common Problems With Fall Outfits in Hot Weather

Let’s talk through the common issues that I’ve heard from you all when trying to dress for fall when it’s hot.

1. Too Hot to Layer
It’s way too hot to layer, but layers are what make fall outfits feel like fall. So how do you create fall outfits that look seasonal when you can’t pile on cardigans and jackets yet?

2. Still Feels Like Summer
Sometimes it’s still LEGIT summer weather, even into October. (Girl, I feel you — same where I am.) When it’s 85 outside, how do you get out of summer style and put together warm-weather fall outfits that feel right for the season?

3. Cool Mornings, Hot Afternoons
Cool mornings and hot afternoons make it impossible to dress once for the whole day. What kind of fall outfits for hot weather actually work when temps swing 20 degrees? (This happens where I live too.)

4. You’re Ready for Jeans, But It’s Too Hot
You’re ready to wear jeans again, but it’s just too hot. How can you style bottoms that give you a fall vibe without feeling stifling?

5. The Shoe Dilemma
Shoes feel impossible. Sandals look too summery, but boots are ridiculous when it’s 85°. So what footwear makes sense for early fall outfits in warm weather?

Whew, I feel you! Before we dive in, let’s set expectations. There’s really no perfect substitute for true fall outfits when it’s hot outside — unless you want to sweat your brains out. 😅 So instead, we’ll work with what we can. The goal is to help you shift out of summer style and into fall style as much as possible, given the reality of warm weather.

TLDR: We can’t fully embrace sweaters and boots, but we can do something to move out of summer vibes and into more fall-ready looks.

Got it? Let’s do it!

The Keys to Dressing for Fall When It’s Hot

Let’s talk about what to look for when you’re putting together outfits for warm fall weather. I shared these recently in my post Elevated Casual & Work Outfits for Early Fall, but we definitely need to talk about them here!

Aim for pieces that do four things:

1. Breathe well — Stick with fabrics that are lightweight and breathable so you stay comfortable in lingering warm weather.

2. Come in richer fall tones — Swap your bright summer colors for browns, maroon/burgundy, olive, softer blues, rich greens, deep yellows, etc. to bring in those fall vibes — even if the fabric feels more like summer.

3. Look tailored without being heavy — In the summer, flowy, lightweight pieces feel right. But in the fall, we start to lean into structure. Since it’s still hot, opt for pieces that are lightweight but have clean lines or a tailored cut to give that structured feel without the bulk.

4. Provide visual interest with elevated details — When a piece has interesting details, like pleats, flutter sleeves, or a great print, you don’t need layers to make the outfit feel pulled together.

When you keep these four things in mind, you can pull together early fall outfits that feel seasonal without overheating. Now, let’s look at some specific pieces that work well in hot fall weather.

Examples of Pieces That Work for Warm Fall Outfits

Now that you know the four keys to dressing for fall when it’s hot, let’s talk about specific pieces that actually work in real life. These are the kinds of items I reach for when I want my outfits to feel like fall but it’s still too warm for sweaters and boots.

SIZING: I’m 5’6” and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

Wide Leg Jeans In Lightweight Fabric
Wide leg jeans are instantly more breathable than skinny or slim-straight styles, making them much more comfortable in the heat. In addition, many brands offer jeans in a lighter-weight denim that works better for warm days.

One of my favorites is THIS pair of Wit & Wisdom wide leg jeans. The fabric is super thin, soft, and stretchy — and they have the brand’s signature stretchy waistband (which has honestly been LIFE-CHANGING for me)! They’re easy to wear on those not-scorching-but-still-pretty-warm days. I wear size 6.

Another pair that’s fairly thin, buttery soft, suuuuper stretchy and comfy, and has a stretchy waistband is THIS pair by KUT From the Kloth. Courtney and I both love these pants! I size down to 4 in this colorway.

Twill Pants and Lightweight Trousers
Trousers are perfect for looking polished without the bulk of heavy fabrics. Twill pants or lightweight pleated trousers give you that structured fall feel while staying breathable enough for warm days.

THIS pair of twill pants is a good option for warm fall outfits. It has a little structure but it pretty lightweight compared to chinos or heavier fabrics. Much better option for warm weather. I wear them in size S.

You can also go for wide leg pants and trousers like THESE, THESE, and THESE. They come in varying weights, and some may work better for you than others depending on your climate. But, these should at least give you ideas for styles you can look for when trying to figure out what to wear in the fall when it’s hot!

Shoes That Bridge Summer and Fall
Boots just don’t make sense when it’s 85°, but sandals can feel too summery. The key is to choose shoes that bridge the gap. Flats like loafers, mules, ballet flats, and low-profile sneakers instantly shift your outfit toward fall without the heat of boots. I’ll share some in the shopping roundup at the bottom of this post!

Another option is to stick with sandals, but choose ones that have a heavier look. Styles with thicker straps or chunkier soles in suede or leather give off that fall feel while still keeping your feet cool, such as Birkenstocks or buckle slides. By the way, Courtney loves THIS pair of Birks with the single buckle. She loves how they can be dressed down with a t-shirt and jeans AND they work for nicer outfits with dresses or elevated tops.

Breathable Tops in Fall Colors
A top like THIS is PERFECT for fall outfits for hot weather! This top is SO breathable — I own it in another color and it was one of my go-to tops on the hottest summer days. It feels weightless. This burgundy print colorway totally feels like fall, yet the breathable fabric will keep you cool! I wear size S.

Short Sleeve Tops & Tanks in Fall Colors
You can also simply wear short sleeve tops and tanks in fall colors. Sometimes you just need a tank top to survive the heat. Again, we can’t fully dress like it’s fall, but we’ll do what we can. So, remember that you can go for tank tops in fall colors like olive or burgundy. Pair them with darker toned or fall toned lightweight pants.

For t-shirts, I really like THIS one in olive (and in white, for that matter) in warmer months. It’s on the thinner side, without being too thin. I’m unsure of sizing at the moment. I sized up to M in two colorways, but I recently ordered it in the striped version and needed size S.

Lightweight Dresses
A breathable dress is one of the easiest things to wear when it’s still hot. Choose prints or colors that feel more fall-leaning (like deeper florals or jewel tones), and layer with a denim jacket or cardigan later when temps cool down.

One dress that I love is THIS maxi dress. I wear the black one in the spring, summer, AND fall. It’s not as breathable as the dress above, but it still keeps you decently cool — currently wearing it as I write this post, and it’s 80 today! So COMFY and SOFT, too! Comes in tons of colors, HERE. Wearing size S.

Short Sleeve Sweaters
I’ll admit I used to think short sleeve sweaters were an oxymoron, but the joke’s on me — they’re kinda awesome. If it’s not blazing hot, I like these tops as options for warm fall outfits. You get the cozy texture of sweaters without the bulk or heat.

I recently got THIS one, and it’s SO GOOD. Looks way more expensive than it is and drapes really well. The armholes are quite low, but I personally don’t mind. Honestly, keeps me cooler that way. 😄 See all the colors HERE. Wearing size S.

More short sleeve sweater options are in the roundup below!

Really, there are plenty of options to dress for fall without overheating — as long as you’re focusing on the right things: breathable fabrics, fall colors and prints, special details that pull an outfit together without layers, and a little structure. With pieces like these in your closet, you’ll be ready for fall while still staying cool.

Now let’s look at some warm fall outfit ideas to see how it all comes together!

Outfits for Fall When It’s Hot

I’ll share a handful of outfits and break down how they can keep you cool while also nodding to fall!

fall outfits for hot weather + What to Wear In the Fall When It’s Hot + putting me together + tips and outfit ideas for what to wear in the fall when its hot + lightweight black maxi dress + black sandals

This dress is one of the dresses I mentioned earlier. I wear it all summer and pull it out again on hot fall days. To give it more of a fall feel, I accessorize with deeper tones like turquoise or maroon, or even leopard print. Accessories are a great way to add touches of fall! Find the dress HERE. Wearing size S.

My earrings are from my favorite earring brand, Nickel & Suede. I’ve been wearing this brand for over 10 years(!!) and love them for being statement earrings that are SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT and easy to wear all day. The exact pair I’m wearing is not available at the moment, but there are similar options HERE and HERE.

This top is the burgundy one I mentioned earlier that is SUPER lightweight and VERY breathable. Sure, you can wear any short sleeve top, but this one is truly SO breathable in comparison. And the color is perfect for fall! It comes in other colorways as well, HERE. Wearing size S.

I paired it with these incredibly lightweight jeans (that are also super comfy). So even though this outfit might look warm, you can stay relatively cool in it! Check out my jeans HERE. Wearing size 6.

Still too hot? Wear dark wash shorts and some leather sandals!

Olive and black is a classic combo year-round, but in the fall it instantly feels seasonal. Add leopard print accessories, and you lean into fall even more!

This lightweight tee is one of my favorites for this time of year. You can find it HERE for $7.99! I’m wearing size M.

One important component here is the pants. They’re pleated and look like trousers, which gives you that tailored and structured quality that we talked about earlier in this post. That structure brings in some fall qualities, without causing you to overheat. And, my pants might look like trousers, but the real win is the fabric. For fall outfits in hot weather, breathability is KEY. This pair is super flowy and lightweight. They’re no longer available, but the takeaway still stands: focus on breathable fabrics to stay cool in early fall.

And yes, my earrings are Nickel & Suede again—love them! Grab them HERE.

Need to stay cool again? No prob. Go for shorts in a similar style, like this:

Find similar shorts HERE. These also have that tailored quality which will bring in fall elements.

While this isn’t an outfit for those ridiculously hot days, this is something I’d wear when it’s mid 70s or so. Here’s an example with a bright color — proof that you’re not limited to muted tones in the fall. (And remember, you can always wear whatever you want, including full summery outfits!) To make this feel more fall-ready, I pulled in fall elements: leopard print accessories, a darker pant, and the tailored trousers. The top is also a sweater, which brings that cozy, luxurious texture of fall — without the bulk.

This top is the sweater I mentioned earlier in this post, which you can grab HERE. I can’t believe it’s only $22.99!! I wear size S.

These pants are the same super lightweight pants that I shared in the previous outfit, which will keep me cool on the warmer days.

My shoes are unfortunately old and not available, but they’re Sam Edelman if you want to search for them!

Here’s a simple one: a t-shirt and jeans. But what’s super important to remember is that both my t-shirt and jeans are thinner and keep me cooler! Fabric is SO IMPORTANT.

There are obviously endless outfits you can wear to get a fall vibe even when temps don’t feel like fall. Hopefully seeing the breakdown of these looks gives you ideas for how to tweak your own outfits!
