Four Things to Do in January to Love Your Style More in 2025

4 Things to Do in January to Love Your Style More in 2025

A new year is the perfect time to assess your wardrobe and set yourself up for success for the rest of the year! Here are four things you can do in January to love your style more in 2025. Doing these four things will make it easier for you to feel pulled together, save time shopping and getting dressed, and feel good in your clothes!

Let’s get to them!

Four Things to Do in January for Success in 2025

Four Things to Do in January for Success in 2025

1. Pull out everything that fits and makes you feel good, and put it front and center.

It’s hard to enjoy getting dressed if you have to sift through a bunch of clothes that don’t fit or that you don’t enjoy wearing. So, I want you to pull things that you can actually wear — what fits you well now and what actually makes you feel good. From there you can assess what you have and gain a clearer understanding of what you need to love your wardrobe.

This might be a lot of stuff. It might be a few things. Either way, it’s important to see what you’ve actually got that works for you now!

Doing this is great because it doesn’t require a full closet clean out. It’s much simpler and less time consuming, but it still allows you to have the same focus and clarity that a closet clean out provides!

Wondering what to do with the rest of your clothes that don’t fit right now? Here’s a quick guideline!

Starter Kit Wardrobe

2. Focus on your starter kit wardrobe even if you’re NOT starting from scratch and continue building from there.

Creating a starter kit wardrobe isn’t just for beginners or those starting from scratch. This exercise is for ANYONE who wants to sort through their wardrobe, make it mix and match better, and shop smarter throughout all of 2025. Even I start with this exercise at the beginning of each season!

A starter kit wardrobe helps you focus on a small set of items, which becomes the foundation for your larger mix and match wardrobe. Then, you can build onto it with more clarity and purpose.

I usually recommend starting with 2-3 pairs of pants, 3-4 shirts, 1-2 layers, and 1-2 pairs of shoes.

My best tip is to choose your bottoms first. Then, make sure each of your tops goes with at least 2 out of 3 of your bottoms. From there, choose layers that work with 2-3 of your tops.

I always start with my favorite items from my closet for that season, choosing roughly the numbers listed above, starting with bottoms, and adding tops that mix and match.

Then, I continue to sift through my closet and add to the starter wardrobe, compiling my larger wardrobe for the season. This exercise helps me see what I have (and actually WANT to wear each season) and shows me if I have any gaps.

If you’d like a handy guide to help you out, download my free Starter Kit Wardrobe Guide. It has starter kit checklists for athleisure, casual and work, and for cold and warm weather so you don’t need to rack your brain to figure out what your wardrobe needs. I also recently updated it to include a few outfit ideas and store recommendations for various pieces (like where to shop for sweatshirts or blouses). 3. Know your shape and key measurements — so you can find clothes that fit more easily!

The third thing you can do to set your style up for success this year is to know your key measurements in addition to your body shape.

Wouldn’t you LOVE to cut down the amount of clothes you have to try on to find things that fit? The more you understand key measurements and your body shape, the more time you SAVE avoiding things that are 99% likely to not fit you well.

For key measurements, I’m referring to things like your ideal inseam lengths, ideal rise (in inches, not just the label “high rise” or “mid rise”), and ideal shirt length. For body shape, focus on understanding which of the five basic body shapes yours falls into. Taking the time to understand these measurements is a GAME CHANGER! It makes shopping easier and faster as you can eliminate TONS of options before you even waste time trying them on!

For example, I can avoid SO MANY pairs of jeans just by knowing my ideal inseam and ideal rise. I know a 10.5″ rise will sit awkwardly on me. And that a top that’s 21″ long means I won’t have to tuck it! If a site lists these measurements, I can choose to avoid or select them before even ordering, saving me tons of time and energy while shopping and allowing me to turn my attention to things that are way more likely to work for me because of the measurements.

Also, by knowing what your body type is, you can shop from brands that are generally cut better for your figure and not waste as much time with brands that aren’t cut to complement your shape.

If there’s one thing you can do to make shopping and style a whole lot easier, it’s to take your measurements, understand your body shape, and use that info to learn to dress yourself more easily

You can start this process this month, and it’ll make it easier for you to find clothes that fit for the rest of the year!

4. Find your formulas.

Do you have go-to formulas that you can rely on to get dressed in a pinch? I have style formulas for my various lifestyles, like athleisure and casual wear. When I find myself in a rush or in a rut, I can go to a tried and true formula and build an outfit from there.

Examples for athleisure outfit formulas:

    • flare leggings + graphic print sweatshirt
    • joggers + zip-up sweatshirt
    • flare leggings + striped tee + vest

Examples for casual outfits:

    • jeans + relaxed sweater + lifestyle sneakers
    • wide leg jeans + long sleeve tee tucked in + short cardigan
    • straight leg jeans + graphic print sweatshirt + lifestyle sneakers

With these, you can plug in pieces and pump out outfits! Psstt…you can totally steal my formulas above!

sweatshirt + leggings + jacket + sneakers + hoop earrings
