A few weeks ago I shared 6 Winter Clothes You Can Mix and Match Effortlessly, which was full of helpful basics that make your wardrobe functional and easy to use. Today I’m following that post up with 6 FUN pieces you can add to your winter wardrobe to level up your style this winter! I’ve shared before that my philosophy for crafting a great wardrobe is to have a healthy mix of foundational pieces (basics) and “filler” (fun) pieces. For more on that, you can read my blog post My Philosophy for Crafting a Wardrobe: Foundational + Filler Pieces.
These 6 fun pieces are all still SUPER versatile and can be worn with plenty of other things, but they’re definitely beyond basics — adding prints, colors, or interesting details to the mix. When you pair them with the basics from the 6 Winter Clothes You Can Mix and Match Effortlessly, you can put together a stylish outfit effortlessly.
SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9.

1. Plaid Pants
Plaid is popular this season, so plaid pants are a must! These pants give you a fun, super stylish looking outfit, without appearing overdone. I’ve mentioned these pants before, but as a refresher, they’re soft, thick, comfortable, and easy to wear thanks to the flexible elastic waistband. Find the pants HERE. I’m wearing size S.
Now, do I need work clothes? No. BUT, these pants can totally be worn with a casual tee and sneakers! I’m so excited for that!

2. Graphic Print Sweatshirt
Getting a few cute graphic print sweatshirts totally upgraded my super casual style, and this one is adorable! It was for the holiday season, but it totally still works post-holidays as well. A graphic print sweatshirt helps you look cute in a sweatshirt and jeans! You don’t have to give up comfort, and you don’t have to dress up to feel stylish and cute. 😊

Sneakers: Nordstrom (exact–wearing size 8.5)

3. Burgundy Corduroys
Burgundy corduroys are everywhere this season, and they’re a great addition that will still look good beyond just this season. They’re timeless! They look great with black, white/cream, black and white stripes, black/white printed tops, navy-based printed tops, and printed tops that have maroon and purples in the mix. Here I’m simply pairing these corduroys with a black turtleneck, and they make it look like I put in extra effort. But, I didn’t! I had to put on pants just the same. 😄

4. Colored Cardigan, Blazer, or Zip-Up Layer
Adding a colored layer to the mix goes a long way! This red sherpa zip-up is really soft and cozy. So comfortable! And, it punches up a basic white long sleeve tee and black leggings effortlessly. Find it in several colors HERE. I’m wearing size M.
My sweater blazer is quite old and no longer available, but you can find similar options in other colors HERE. (If you bought the Winter Wardrobe & Outfit Guide there are more options for colored cardigans, comfy blazers, and zip-ups in the shopping guide!)

5. Faux-Leather Pants
Ooooh, this is a fun one. Confession: you know when leather leggings were really popular back in the day? I always loved the look but never loved them on me because the leather + the super skinny formfitting cut just made me feel weird. However, straight leg faux leather pants? I’m in!
I love how faux leather adds a luxurious touch to outfits compared to regular black pants. Nothing wrong with regular black pants, but if you want to level up your style, try faux leather pants instead!
Second confession: I will personally not get much use out of faux-leather pants for my very casual work-from-home-and-pick-up-kids-from-school life. But, I really do think they’re a classic piece that are so nice to have when you need to get dressed up.
These faux-leather pants are featured in the work outfits in the Winter Wardrobe & Outfit Guide. You can use regular black pants, too. But again, the faux leather punches up your outfit!
The pair I’m wearing here are from Old Navy. I went for the cheapest option because I usually do when I’m experimenting with something. You can find them HERE. I’m wearing size S. There is also this pair from LOFT that looks great and this pair from Gap.

Top: Kohl’s (exact–wearing size S; similar)
Faux-Leather Pants: Old Navy (exact–wearing size 6)
Boots: Gap (similar, similar)

6. Mary Jane Flats
These shoes have carried over from the fall, and they’re a fun addition that refreshes any outfit you’d normally wear with flats. I’ve come to really like how they feel more elevated than sneakers and less dressy than pointed toe flats, but just as polished. The pair I’m wearing in this blog post are inexpensive from Old Navy. Like I said, when I’m experimenting, I go cheap. They’re pretty comfortable nonetheless! You can find them in several colors HERE. I’m wearing size 9.
If you add any of these 6 fun pieces to your winter basics, you’ll create stylish combinations with ease! Which winter trends or fun additions are you loving this season?
