How to Dress Up a T-Shirt: Easy Styling Tips

dress up a t-shirt + How to Dress Up a T-Shirt: Easy Styling Tips + putting me together

You probably have a t-shirt (or five 😆) that you automatically pair with jeans or shorts and sneakers. It makes sense! T-shirts are inherently casual, so it’s natural to reach for other casual pieces to wear with them.

But that doesn’t mean a t-shirt can only be worn casually.

You know I want you to get more use out of the clothes in your wardrobe, and one way to do that is to learn how to change the overall dressiness of an outfit. You can take something decidedly casual, like a t-shirt, and pair it with dressier pieces to make the whole outfit feel dressier.

Today I’ll show you how to dress up a t-shirt using my simple framework for how to dress something up and down. With this simple framework, you’ll get lots more versatility out of all kinds of pieces in your closet!

How to Dress Up a T-Shirt: Pair It With Dressier Pieces

Here’s the basic concept:

Some clothing items are decidedly casual. A basic tee is a great example. It’s the same with athleisure pants and lifestyle sneakers.

Other pieces are decidedly dressier, like heels, a nice skirt, a blazer, or shiny statement jewelry.

And then there are plenty of pieces that fall somewhere in between. Not everything fits neatly into a “casual” or “dressy” box, and that’s fine.

But when you’re putting together an outfit, it can be helpful to notice which direction the different pieces are pulling the overall look by simply asking: “Are there more casual pieces in my outfit or more dressy pieces?”

Since a t-shirt starts out casual, one of the easiest ways to dress it up is to pair it with pieces that are inherently dressier, such as:

  • A pleated, satin, or other dressier skirt
  • Trousers or polished pants
  • A blazer, moto jacket, or polished jacket
  • Heels, sleek flats, or another dressier shoe
  • Shiny or more noticeable jewelry

You don’t need to use ALL of these things at once. BUT, the more casual elements you use, the more casual your overall outfit will tend to feel. The more dressy elements you add, the more you start to tip the outfit in an overall dressier direction.

Let’s look at some examples to make it concrete!

Level 1: T-Shirt + Casual Pieces

Let’s start with the most straightforward example:

t-shirt (casual) + athleisure pants (casual) + lifestyle sneakers (casual) = SUPER CASUAL OUTFIT

We have three decidedly casual pieces, so the whole outfit reads casual.

(BTW, you can shop all these pieces at the bottom of this post. But, I’ve gotta say, I LOVE both the wide leg pants — super soft and look polished, and the barrel leg pants — the BEST feeling, swishy, stretchy tech fabric! Both under $40!)

And, we can do it again with more casual pieces:

t-shirt (casual) + jeans (casual) + lifestyle sneakers (casual) = CASUAL OUTFIT

Not quite athleisure, but still totally casual with jeans.

Now let’s start changing the balance.

Level 2: T-Shirt + Casual AND One Dressier Piece

Here we have mostly casual pieces with just ONE dressier piece: wide leg trousers.

Wide leg trousers are typically for workwear, and you naturally pair them with a blouse and flats or heels. But, I love to pair them with t-shirts and lifestyle sneakers for an effortlessly cool vibe!

This formula is now:

t-shirt (casual) + wide leg trousers (dressy) + lifestyle sneakers (casual) + denim jacket (casual) = CASUAL OUTFIT (but with a little polish)

Let’s change the balance again, adding more dressy pieces.

Level 3: T-Shirt + Casual AND Semi-Dressy Pieces

For this outfit, we’ll mix casual and semi-dressier elements. Remember how in my intro, I said some pieces are definitively casual, some pieces are definitively dressy, and others are somewhere between? Let’s see what the balance looks like when we have some of those in-between pieces.

First Outfit:

t-shirt (casual) + jeans (casual) + sleek flats (dressier) + cardigan (between) = ELEVATED CASUAL OUTFIT

The flats and the cardigan add polish and make it a tad dressier, as opposed to sneakers and/or a casual jacket or a hoodie.

Second Outfit:

t-shirt (casual) + trousers (between) + denim jacket (casual) + sleek flats (dressier) = ELEVATED CASUAL OUTFIT

Again, we have either a mix or two casual items, one in-between item, and one dressier item, giving us an outfit that is casual but is much more elevated than Levels 1 or 2.

Third Outfit:

t-shirt (casual) + trousers (between) + flats (dressier) = ELEVATED CASUAL OUTFIT OR RELAXED WORKWEAR OUTFIT

Again, we have a mix. These trousers are marketed as workwear, but they feel sort of like denim, so I consider them “in-between” — not decisively casual or dressy. So, you get another elevated casual outfit. Wear this to lunch out or in a relaxed work environment.

Level 4: T-Shirt + Casual AND Dressy Pieces

Next, let’s add some more definitively dressy pieces:

t-shirt (casual) + jeans (casual) + blazer (dressier) + sleek flats (dressier) = ELEVATED / SEMI-DRESSY CASUAL OUTFIT

Now we have a mix: TWO casual pieces and TWO dressier pieces. It’s not fully casual like Levels 1 and 2, and it’s sharper looking than Level 3, but it has not yet tipped into fancy-dressy land.

The result is somewhere in the middle — an even more polished, slightly dressier version of elevated casual — which works well when you want to look sharp and polished, but not overly dressed up.

Level 5: T-Shirt + Mostly Dressier Pieces

dress up a t-shirt + How to Dress Up a T-Shirt: Easy Styling Tips + putting me together + white fitted tee + black leather moto jacket + white and black satin skirt + black suede heels + gold and black icon necklace

Now let’s take the exact same casual tee and pair it with even more dressy elements:

T-shirt (casual) + satin skirt (dressy) + sleek heels (dressy) + moto jacket (dressy) = DRESSIER OUTFIT

The t-shirt hasn’t changed. It’s still a decidedly casual piece!

But now it’s ONE casual element surrounded by THREE dressier elements — 75% of the outfit is dressy. The satin skirt, heels, and moto jacket all pull the outfit in a dressier direction, so the overall look tips into dressy.

Do you see how the framework works? Clothing math! 😆

But seriously, you don’t have to just be born as a wizard with clothes to dress up something like a t-shirt (or dress down other pieces).

This framework is concrete — pair the item with enough dressier elements to make the overall outfit read dressier.

This is one reason I love teaching you principles like this instead of only encouraging you to memorize individual outfits. When you actually understand what’s happening with style, you can start playing around with the balance yourself.

T-Shirt Outfit Formulas to Try

Now that you know how the concept works, here are some easy t-shirt outfit formulas you can try with pieces you already own.

I’ll also share examples of some of the outfit formulas in action to give you ideas. (Note, I don’t have pics of every formula — just using ones I already have! 😄)

Casual T-Shirt Outfit Formulas

  • t-shirt + athleisure pants + lifestyle sneakers
  • t-shirt + jeans + sneakers + casual jacket or cardigan
  • t-shirt + shorts + casual sandals
  • t-shirt + casual pants + sneakers or sandals

Elevated Casual T-Shirt Outfit Formulas

This is where you can have a lot of fun mixing casual and dressier pieces.

  • t-shirt + jeans + blazer + sleek flats
  • t-shirt + jeans + moto jacket + dressier shoes
  • t-shirt + trousers + sneakers + jewelry
  • t-shirt + skirt + sneakers, sandals, or flats + casual jacket

Notice that these formulas don’t all use the exact same combination of casual and dressy pieces. You can play with the balance depending on what you own, where you’re going, and how dressed up you want to feel.

Dressier T-Shirt Outfit Formulas

When you want the overall outfit to feel dressier, surround your T-shirt with more pieces that pull the look in that direction.

  • t-shirt + dressier skirt + moto jacket + heels + shiny jewelry
  • t-shirt + trousers + blazer + heels

Use This Framework With Your Own Clothes

I hope this gives you a simple, doable method for how to dress up a t-shirt, and ultimately, how to get more out of the clothes you own.

You don’t need to memorize a bunch of styling rules or recreate these exact outfits. Just remember the basic idea: if you’re starting with something decidedly casual and want to dress it up, try pairing it with dressier pieces.

You can play around with the balance until the outfit feels right for where you’re going and for how dressed up you want to be.

And, the more you practice looking at your clothes this way, the easier it becomes to see new possibilities with pieces you already have — which means more outfits without necessarily needing more clothes.
