It’s time for another post in our series The Easy to Use Wardrobe, where I share one tip or tool to help you make your wardrobe easier to use.
I know you want to open up your closet doors, look inside, love everything you see, and be able to pull outfit after outfit from it easily each day. But if this feels like a dream, rest assured that it can legit become a reality!
How? By having a system for style.
You don’t have to be born with a sense of style or have an innate understanding of how to put together a better wardrobe. You just need better frameworks for style.
So in this series, I want to share bits and pieces of the system I use (and teach) to have a wardrobe that’s easy to use.

Easy Wardrobe Tip: Don’t Settle on Fit
Today we are talking about FIT!
When I teach style, I say that you need to start with the RIGHT pieces. And what makes a piece RIGHT? Three things:
- It fits your LIFESTYLE.
- It fits your BODY.
- It fits your STYLE TYPE.
Fit is one of the things that is the least fun to figure out but makes the BIGGEST impact.
“If you don’t have fit, you don’t have style.”
When clothes don’t fit well, they can make you feel frumpy and sloppy, no matter how stylish or trendy they are. It’s because, as the famous stylists Stacy London and Clinton Kelly say, “If you don’t have fit, you don’t have style.”
The pickier you are about fit, the better.
Look at the pictures below. In the first picture, I’m wearing pants that are okay-fitting. They aren’t terrible on me, but they don’t hit my fit points as well as they could. For instance, they don’t fit around my hips as well as pants could, and the rise is a tad lower than my ideal rise for this style of pant. In the second picture, the pants fit better in those areas, which creates a more polished and put together look overall.
Nailing your fit can singlehandedly take outfits from frumpy to pulled together.
But, since this series is actually called The Easy to Use Wardrobe, we should also note how being picky about fit completely transforms your wardrobe and makes it WAY easier to use!
You have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear? Several factors go into WHY that happens, and ONE of them is because your clothes don’t fit well.
If you don’t love how clothes fit, you won’t want to wear them. And, we’re not just talking about whether the clothes are the right size. That’s just the starting place.
We’re also talking about the nitty gritty things — all the notable fit points, like whether the rise is right for you, whether pants flare out at the hips in a way that isn’t ideal, whether the top is too long, whether the pants are too long, whether the torso of the top is too clingy, and more.
You see, the first pair of pants in my example above fit okay. They are the “right” size. I was able to get them over my hips. The waistband fit. And the length was fine. But, they didn’t fit me best in all of the details — the fit points. For example, they didn’t fit around my hips in the best way, as evidenced by the v-shape that is made at the crotch. The rise was not my ideal rise for adding a lengthening effect.
When your clothes don’t nail all those little fit points in the best ways, it leads to feeling frumpy or unconfident in your clothes.
And that turns into having a closet full of clothes that you don’t like wearing.
Now, imagine all of those clothes that you don’t like wearing staring you in the face each morning. What happens? You can’t put together an outfit because you don’t like your options. That is NOT a wardrobe that’s easy to use.
If I had settled for the first pants, the okay-fitting pants, I wouldn’t want to wear them much because I don’t feel great in them. In contrast, the second pair of pants is my go-to pants. I love wearing them! They fit well and make me feel good. It’s a no-brainer to wear them!
So if you want a wardrobe that’s easy to use, you HAVE TO be picky about your fit on the front end when you’re shopping. You can’t settle for clothes that sort of fit and continue collecting item after item that you don’t love.*
(*Okay, I actually am okay with you doing this if you have hit a temporary stage of body or life changes — those transitions require a little bit of flexibility and temporary wardrobe situations. But I do not want you to stay there and settle there longer than you need to and continue having a wardrobe that makes you feel mediocre!)
