What to Wear for Family Pictures: Four Sets of Family Outfits

Let’s help you prep for family photos! It can be really time consuming to figure out what to wear for family pictures and to coordinate it all. Thankfully, one of our PMT team members, Courtney*, LOVES styling family photo outfits for people, and she’s put together several sets to give you ideas.

Before we get to that, I’ll share my biggest tips for choosing what to wear for family pictures!

My 3 Main Tips for Choosing What to Wear for Family Pictures

These are all from my post What to Wear for Family Photos + How to Plan Outfits where I break down the how-to strategy for putting together sets of outfits for family photos so you can do it, too, no matter what styles or prints you like. Even if the sets of outfits that we have in today’s post don’t suit your style, you can still use these tips to put outfits together on your own! That blog post also includes all of our family photos since 2015. If you haven’t read it yet, or if you’ve read it before but need a refresher, check it out HERE!

In case you don’t want to go over there, I’ll recap three of my biggest tips here. I share these every year, and they STILL hold true!

1. Start with the person who has the most limited options, then work through the family in order of least options / hardest to dress to most options / easiest to dress.

Whether it’s the people who are pickiest about what they wear, the person with the least clothes, or just whatever other limitations there are, start with them first.

I am the least picky and least limited in options among my family members, so I always choose my outfits last. I know many other women who are the opposite and choose their outfits first.

When we had fewer kids, and when our kids were younger and had fewer opinions about clothes, I always started with my husband. He’s not picky, but he has a minimalistic wardrobe, so he just had the fewest options.

Now that we have three kids who all have very strong opinions about what they wear, I honestly don’t know who to start with yet, LOL! (I’ll figure it out eventually, or at least I’ll figure out which kid I can bribe the most easily to wear something they don’t love, haha!)

Whoever it is in your family, start with their outfit options first, and then build around them.

2. Mix up the color of everyone’s pants/bottoms if you don’t want to be matchy.
I get the question of how to not be “matchy” often, and I have found that mixing up bottoms works WONDERS.  I’ve preached this truth for your own wardrobes (HERE), and the same applies to mixing up your family’s outfits for pictures.

If everyone is wearing blue jeans, then the only part of your outfits that are different are your tops.  If the colors on the bottom are mixed up, the photos have a lot more variety.

3. Add a print or two! In fact, start with a print if you’re really stuck.
I always tell you that prints add visual interest to outfits, and this holds true for a family photo, too.
Prints also give you a template for a color palette, so they can be a great place to draw inspiration or direction from! When creating outfits for yourself, you can pull any colors from a print and incorporate them into the rest of your outfit.  The print does the work of tying those colors together for you.  This works for family photos, too!
You can either add prints after the fact, or you can START with a print in someone’s outfit (yours, your kids’, whoever’s!) and build the rest of the family’s color palette around that.
All right, now let’s see some examples of what to wear for family pictures this year!
