Let’s get more use out of your clothes! You know I’m big on helping you choose pieces that are versatile and can be worn a variety of ways so you can use fewer clothes but still have lots of options. So, today I want to show six outfits with a brown sweater that you can easily copy!
A brown sweater is a super simple wardrobe building block that I personally love having. However, if you prefer any other neutral, like grey, cream, black, or navy, those work as great substitutes in all of today’s outfits!
The sweater I’m featuring today is really affordable at just $24.99 and even better when it’s on sale! It’s not super thick and is a good weight for early fall and warmer climates. I just got this sweater so I can’t speak to durability yet. But one thing I especially like is the length— I don’t need to tuck it, and that’s HUGE! (Check out my recent blog post with 40+ Fall Tops You Don’t Need to Tuck.) Find it in several colors, HERE. I sized up to M for a slightly more relaxed look.
If you’re looking for other neutral sweaters, I’ve rounded up several in the widget below!
In particular, I’ve heard fantastic things about the Quince 100% Organic Cotton Boyfriend Crew Sweater. My friend said it feels really good, and she doesn’t need to tuck it…and she’s petite, for reference. Find it several colors HERE in straight sizes and HERE in plus sizes.

6 Outfits With a Brown Sweater
These outfits are all from the Fall Wardrobe & Outfit Guide, which helps you build a versatile fall wardrobe and mix and match it to your heart’s content with hundreds of outfit ideas at your fingertips.
Here are five outfits with a brown sweater for fall from the guide that you can copy!
SIZING: I’m 5’6” and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

1. Brown Sweater + Light Wash Jeans + Lifestyle Sneakers
For a casual outfit, I love a brown sweater with light wash jeans! Lighter washes read more relaxed and casual, so this outfit fits my relaxed style really well, but you can totally go for dark wash jeans and lifestyle sneakers instead.

Necklace: Nordstrom (exact; nearly identical—but way more affordable!)

2. Brown Sweater + Dark Wash Jeans + Loafers
Speaking of dark wash jeans, see how they can instantly give you a more tailored look? To play into that a bit, this time I finished off the outfit with loafers for a slightly more elevated casual look!
These straight leg jeans are thick and sturdy but have quite a bit of stretch. I did the stretch test, and while they don’t get SAGGY, they do get a bit loose around the knees. Be sure to size down as these are quite stretchy and run large. They come in straight, plus, petite, and tall, HERE. I sized down to 27 because of the stretchiness and wanting them to still look tailored and polished.

3. Brown Sweater + Dark Wash Jeans + Red Accents
Add one of the most popular colors of the season by bookending your outfit with red earrings and red Mary Janes! They add such a fun twist to the basic combo of a brown sweater + dark wash jeans.
These earrings are from my favorite place for statement earrings, Nickel & Suede. The earrings are fantastic quality, and they are made of leather so they’re super lightweight and comfortable. I’ve been wearing Nickel & Suede earrings since 2013! (Plus the founder, Kilee Nickels, is my blogging buddy from way back when!) Use code PUTTINGMETOGETHER5 to get $5 off your order!
The Mary Janes are a great $30 option to play with the trend without breaking the bank. They’re pretty comfy for being just $30, too! Check them out HERE. I’m wearing size 9.

4. Brown Sweater + Wide Leg Ecru Jeans + Sneakers or Boots
So simple, but so cute! I love this lighter brown color and ecru together.
These are the jeans I reviewed from Target recently. They were an awkward length for me, not quite ankle length but not quite long enough for full length, so I chopped off several inches to make them a proper ankle length. (If you’re wondering what proper ankle length is, see my post “How to Wear Shoes With Jeans in Different Cuts!”) If you cut these, the hem will go from finished to raw. If you don’t like raw hems, take them to a tailor instead to bring the length up. They come in lots of colorways HERE. I wear size 6. Do the stretch test with them — they stretched out enough to conform to me and no longer feel suffocating, but they did NOT get saggy or lose shape through an entire day of wear.
I’m always nervous about jeans that don’t have a stretchy waistband. I have very, VERY few of them. I’m happy to report that I sat ALL DAY in these jeans and would still want to wear them again! 😄
I’d wear this outfit with sneakers for my usual work-from-home days and then throw on boots if I wanted to dress it up a bit.

5. Brown Sweater + Ecru Wide Leg Trousers
Here’s the work edition of outfit #4, but with a red twist! This sweater is versatile and can very easily be worn in casual and work outfits. Simply swap the jeans for a pair of work-appropriate pants in a similar color, like the wide leg trousers I’m wearing here or pair of chinos like THESE.
These trousers have an elastic in the back of the waistband! I work from home all day and really only own these to show work outfits for you all. But I’ve gotta say, these pants make me wish I got to dress up for an office — I like them so much! Find them HERE. I wear size S.

6. Brown Sweater + Black Wide Leg Pants
And of course we’ve gotta pair this sweater with black wide leg pants! No need to overthink it — simplicity just works! One thing I especially love about this sweater is the length! When a top hits at the right length, you can pair it with wide leg pants without needing to tuck it all tightly. 🙌🏼
These pants are the ever-so-comfortable Lauren Conrad ponte pants that I have mentioned several times. SO. COMFY. And so affordable! Incredibly STRETCHY, but thick and substantial…meaning they don’t look cheap. 😄 I’ve shown these both dressed up with a blouse and flats and dressed down with sneakers and a tee. They’re really versatile…and did I mention COMFORTABLE??? These feel like the holy grail Liverpool Kelsey Ponte Pants but are like 1/3 the cost. 😮
