4 Easy Ways for How to Make Your Outfits More Interesting (and Not So Basic)

Ever put on an outfit and just feel… kinda bored with it? Maybe it’s because you’ve worn it for the thousandth time. Maybe it’s because you don’t know how to make a boring outfit look good when you’re working with basics.

Whatever the reason, the good news is you don’t have to overhaul your wardrobe to fix it. And you definitely don’t have to buy a whole new style to stop looking basic.

Today I’m sharing four super easy strategies for how to make outfits look more interesting, using pieces you probably already own.

1. Add Color or Print

If your outfit leans neutral, this is your easiest fix. Swap out one piece for a printed or colored piece, or add it as an accessory.

You don’t have to go full rainbow or full pattern. One colorful or printed element, like earrings or shoes, can be enough to give your outfit a twist.

If you’re not sure where to start, start with shoes or jewelry. It’s the lowest-commitment way to test this out!

The red shoes give this outfit a really fun twist!

Printed pants pack a PUNCH and combine with basic pieces, like a black tee and minimal sandals, to create a standout — not so boring — outfit.

2. Play With Texture

Texture is such an underrated style tool. Wearing pieces with texture adds visual interest and extra style points — without needing any print or color.

If you’re shy of color or don’t love prints, you 1,000% need to embrace TEXTURED pieces!

Swap a plain top for a top with texture, and suddenly your outfit has more depth.

Jeans (wearing size 4 Petite)
Sandals (wearing size 8 — soooo comfy)

Earrings (wearing 30mm)

You can even go for shoes with a woven detail to add texture, like the sneakers and flats I’m wearing in the pictures above.

Shop Outfit #1:
Tee (wearing size S)
Jacket (wearing size S)
Jeans (wearing size 28)
Shoes (wearing size 9)
Necklace (get 20% off with code TAKE20)
Earrings (wearing 30mm)

Shop Outfit #2:
Top (wearing size S)
Jacket – in different colorway (wearing size S)
Pants (wearing size S)
Shoes (wearing size 9)

If you only try one texture swap, make it your top. It’s the piece closest to your face, so it makes the biggest visual difference.

3. Change Up Your Silhouette

This one is big! Trading a piece for something with a different shape can make your whole outfit feel fresh again. It’s one of the fastest ways to make an outfit more interesting without changing what you actually own.

If you typically wear straight or wide leg jeans, think flares or barrel legs. Or, wear a boxy tee with extended sleeves instead of your standard fitted one. It’s the same basic idea, but it will feel totally different. Don’t overlook this one!

If you only try one silhouette swap, start with your jeans. It’s the easiest place to actually feel the difference.

Shop the Outfit:
Top (wearing size S)
Wide Leg Jeans (wearing size 28)
Barrel Leg Jeans (wearing size 6)
Shoes (wearing size 9)

4. Add a Statement Accessory

A great accessory can single-handedly upgrade a white tee and jeans. Try adding a statement earring, a colorful necklace, or a scarf.

This is such an easy, low-effort way to give an outfit some oomph, and one of the quickest ways to stop looking basic without changing a thing you’re wearing.

If you only own one statement piece right now, a bold earring or a colorful necklace are the easiest ones to reach for daily.

Tank Top (wearing size S — my favorite and only $4.97!!!)
Wide Leg Jeans (wearing size 28)
Sandals (wearing size 8 — soooo comfy)
Sneakers (wearing size 9)
Multicolored Bead Necklace (wearing “colorful-06”)

Wrap It Up

Now, you have four strategies to help you make your outfit more interesting. 👏

None of these require you to overhaul your closet or start over from scratch. They just require knowing which levers to pull — and now you do!

I hope this helps you feel more confident and see your outfits with fresh eyes!
