It’s SUCH a great time to get amazing wardrobe essentials at huge discounts — the kind of pieces that make getting dressed so much easier and make you feel like a million bucks. I’ve been covering this sale for the last THIRTEEN(!!) years, and I’m excited to put you in the know of what’s worth grabbing, what will sell out, and what you can skip. Here’s the thing that makes this sale different from every other sale happening in July: it’s not clearance. It is NOT Nordstrom moving out last season’s leftovers.
The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale puts BRAND NEW fall arrivals on sale BEFORE the season starts. We’re talking new jeans, new boots, new jackets, new cardigans — items that haven’t been at full price yet — discounted for a limited time. Once the sale ends, those prices go back up. If you wait until fall to buy them, you’ll pay more.
That’s why people get excited about it every single year — and why I’ve been covering it for 13 years running! It’s one of the only times you can get ahead of the season AND save money at the same time. And for those of us in our 40s who know what we like and want to invest in pieces we’ll actually wear and reach for on repeat? It’s a really, really good opportunity.

A few things to know about this year’s sale!
The preview drops July 7. You can browse every single item before your shopping window opens and add your favorites to a Wish List. Do this BEFORE your access date so you can check out quickly instead of scrolling frantically while your size disappears. It makes a huge difference. Three early access tiers instead of four. Nordstrom simplified the structure this year, which means a longer public sale window. Good news for everyone!
You can now add sold-out items to your Wish List. New this year! If something sells out before you can grab it, add it to your list anyway and you’ll get a notification if it restocks. This was the most requested feature — so glad they finally did it.
Backorders are allowed on select items. For products Nordstrom is confident will arrive, you’ll be able to place a backorder and get notified when they ship.
Is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Worth It?
YES — for specific things. And that qualifier really matters!
This sale is worth it when you shop it with intention — when you know what you need, you know what categories Nordstrom does well, and you’re buying pieces you’ll actually wear all season long. It is NOT worth it if you buy a bunch of things just because they’re discounted and they end up sitting in your closet with the tags on. (We’ve all been there. It’s not fun.)
For those of us in our 40s, this is one of my favorite times to invest in pieces that are a little pricier at full price — quality jeans, good boots, a well-made jacket. Those things are outfit workhorses, have a good cost-per-wear, and make a HUGE difference in how chic and elevated your outfit looks. AND, getting them at a discount before the season starts means you’re wearing them immediately when the weather shifts. That’s the smart way to shop this.
The categories that make this sale genuinely worthwhile, year after year: jeans and denim, boots and booties, jackets and coats, work pants, workout clothes, and sweaters and cardigans. That’s where I focus, and that’s where I’d tell you to focus too. If you want to get a couple of fun statement pieces at a huge discount, that’s also worthwhile — we all need some FUN in our wardrobes! Sometimes fun and unique pieces cost more, so during a sale is a great time to get them.
The Best Items to Buy at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale
After 13 years of shopping and covering this sale, here’s where I put my energy — and where I’d suggest you put yours!
Jeans & Denim
This is consistently my #1 category, and honestly it might be THE best reason to shop this sale. The NSale brings in new styles from the brands I trust most — and some of those styles are exclusive to the sale and never restock afterward. I’ve gotten so many of my all-time favorite pairs of jeans from this sale. The ones I tell you about over and over? A lot of those came from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale!
I look for comfortable, stretchy denim that actually fits and actually feels good — the kind you reach for every single week. Brands like Wit & Wisdom and KUT from the Kloth are my go-tos, and both show up in the sale regularly. These aren’t jeans you buy and tolerate. These are jeans you LOVE.
You can also grab Madewell and Good American jeans. But be warned, Madewell jeans tend to sell out FAST.
Shoes (Especially Sneakers & Boots)
Shoes are a HUGE part of the sale every year, especially boots and sneakers. They’re kind of the stars! NEW fall boots at lower, post-season prices is a REALLY great deal. This is when I invest in new boots if I ever need them. Booties especially sell out in popular sizes fast sometimes (depending on the colorway). So if you see a pair you love during the preview, put them on your Wish List immediately. Don’t wait.
Jackets & Coats
This sale is also a great time to get investment pieces. A quality coat or jacket at 30-40% off before the season starts is significant savings — the kind of piece you’ll wear for years and think about the cost-per-wear. I look for versatile, comfortable styles I can wear a hundred times, not trendy for the sake of trendy. I especially focus on things like moto jackets, long coats, and sporty outerwear (like, from Bernardo or Zella).
Sweaters & Cardigans
Good cozy sweaters. Nordstrom has such SOFT sweaters that are super LIGHTWEIGHT, so you’re cozy without feeling weighed down. A great cardigan or pullover is something you’ll reach for constantly from September through March.
Activewear
Zella activewear shows up in the sale every year, and they are SO worth it. Great, breathable, and stylish activewear. If you haven’t tried Zella yet, the NSale is a great time to start!

What Sells Out First at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale
Based on 13 years of watching this sale unfold in real time, here’s what goes fastest:
Jeans in popular sizes — Shop this category FIRST on your access day. If you see your size, grab it. You can always return.
Boots and booties in popular colors — Shop this category FIRST (if not jeans) on your access day. Don’t save it for after you’ve browsed everything else.
Cardigans from cult-favorite brands — Barefoot Dreams cardigans in particular tend to disappear fast.
Zella — Jackets and workout tops, particularly in the fun colors.
My advice: the first time you shop your access window, go straight for the things most likely to sell out. Get those in your cart and check out FIRST. Then go back and browse everything else. Shipping is free for ALL orders, no minimum, so it doesn’t hurt to place multiple orders and checkout on the popular stuff before browsing the rest.
The Nordstrom Card & Early Access
To shop during Early Access (July 14-16), you need a Nordstrom credit card. Here’s how the tiers work:
- Icon: Highest spend level, shops July 14
- Ambassador: Shops July 15
- Influencer: Shops July 16 — this is where most cardholders land
- Everyone else: July 18
Is the card worth getting? If you shop Nordstrom regularly, I think yes! I got mine years ago specifically for this sale, and it has been AWESOME. And listen, I’m the kind of person that has NO store credit cards. Nordstrom is my ONLY one. You get a lot of perks with it, besides shopping this sale early.

A few more things worth knowing:
- There are no promo codes for the NSale. The discounted price IS the price — no code needed, and no secret code will unlock anything extra.
- You earn points on your purchases and can redeem them for Nordstrom Notes, which is basically store credit.
- Ambassador and Icon cardholders can schedule a Personal Double Points Day during the sale — worth doing if you’re planning a bigger purchase!
- Nordstrom Rack does NOT participate in the Anniversary Sale, but you CAN return NSale purchases at a Rack store.
How to Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Smart
This is the part I really want you to pay attention to, because it’s what determines whether you end up with a few great pieces you love — or a pile of stuff you never wear.
Check your wardrobe before the preview drops. Before July 7, spend 10 minutes looking at what you actually need. What are you reaching for on repeat that’s worn out? What gap keeps annoying you every time you get dressed? THAT’S your shopping list. Going in with a list is the single biggest thing that separates smart shopping from impulse shopping.
Build your Wish List during the preview. When the preview goes live on July 7, go through it and heart everything you’re interested in — by size and color. When your access window opens, you can check out in minutes instead of scrolling frantically while your size disappears.
Buy multiple sizes if you’re unsure. Nordstrom has free shipping and FREE returns on ALL ORDERS! If you’re between sizes or unfamiliar with how a brand fits, buy both and return the one that doesn’t work. So much better than missing out because you waited to decide.
Prioritize first, browse second. When your access window opens, go straight for the things most likely to sell out. Get those checked out first. Then browse everything else at leisure.
Shop online. Shop online. SHOP ONLINE!!!!! Everything in the sale is available at nordstrom.com. Not everything is in every store — each store has its own buyers. Online is the only place you’re guaranteed to see the full sale, and you can filter by your size so you’re not wasting time. (Trust me. I’ve gone into the store 13 years in a row, and they only have a fraction of the items I’m interested in. And I’ve lived in two big cities where you’d think the spread would be huge!)
Online vs. In-Store
Shop online — I’ll say it again! Every item in the Anniversary Sale is available at nordstrom.com. In-store inventory varies by location, so your local store will have some things and not others. Online is where you’ll see everything.
That said, if you want your items quickly and have a Nordstrom nearby, you can order online and choose curbside or in-store pickup. Best of both worlds — full online selection, no shipping wait.
One more thing worth knowing: early access opens at midnight ET, which is 9 PM PT. If you’re behind Eastern Time, you can shop the night before your listed date! Set a reminder!
Restocks: What to Expect
Honest answer: don’t count on it.
In recent years, Nordstrom has not guaranteed restocks after early access. A FEW things do come back, but popular sizes and styles often don’t restock once they’re gone. And most importantly, it’s absolutely not guaranteed, and it’s more rare than common. So don’t bank on anything coming back in stock.
The good news: you can now add sold-out items to your Wish List and get notified if they do restock! Download the Nordstrom app and turn on notifications — that’s your best shot at catching one in time.
Bottom line: if you see something you want, get it. Don’t wait to “think about it” unless you’re genuinely okay with the possibility of it being gone.

Yes! Nordstrom has a generous return policy with free returns. You can return in-store, by mail, or at Nordstrom Rack locations. And get this — there is no stated return timeline. AND, they accept items that have been worn and have no tags. Nordstrom is FAMOUS for its INCREDIBLY GENEROUS return policy. (Obviously if you abuse it, your account will get flagged. But returning with no tags and after a long period is very, very normal. Just don’t do it 50 times or something like that!)
