Gift Guide: My Top Stylish, Easy to Wear Wardrobe Essentials for the 40 Year Old Who Wants a Style Refresh

Gift Guide: My Top Stylish, Easy to Wear Wardrobe Essentials for the 40 Year Old Who Wants a Style Refresh + putting me together + wardrobe essentials for woman in her 40s

Let’s get the gift-giving season started! I took a survey asking which gift guides you’d want to see, and today I’m sharing one of the top three most-voted for: gifts for a 40 year old woman who’s ready to refresh her wardrobe with elevated classics. If you have someone on your list who’s feeling stuck in a rut or is ready for a refresh, these wardrobe essentials are the perfect gifts to help her reset.

Each item on this list was chosen to help build a wardrobe that’s current, comfortable, and effortlessly polished. It includes versatile staples like great-fitting jeans and stylish sneakers as well as those small details that pull everything together, like a great pair of earrings or a classic leather bag.

Adding just one or two of these items to her closet will go a LONG way in her feeling fresher and more confident.

Also, remember that these are wardrobe essentials, which means they’re foundational items that are more basic and simpler in design so that they’re versatile. You can absolutely have a fun wardrobe full of exciting pieces (and I encourage you to!), but your wardrobe will still need foundational items to pull together all of those exciting pieces.

The Best Gifts to Help Her Feel Updated and Put Together

Gift Guide: My Top Stylish, Easy to Wear Wardrobe Essentials for the 40 Year Old Who Wants a Style Refresh + putting me together + a great pair of comfortable and flattering jeans

1. A great pair of jeans

Every wardrobe needs a great pair of jeans! Here are some options that would make great gifts for someone who wants to reset her wardrobe. They’re from quality brands that are fairly comfortable, well-loved, and have become favorites of lots of the women we work with.

Quince is a great brand to gift because the denim is supportive but stretchy. While they only made honorable mention in my Best Comfortable Jeans post, I think the combo of supportive + stretchy is the perfect balance for most people. It’ll help them feel secure and supported while also being comfortable with stretch that moves with them.

Two styles that would be great to gift are the Straight Leg style and the Wide Leg style. I own both and really like them!

If you prefer to gift a bootcut jean, I recommend THIS pair.

Another great pair that’s always reliable is the KUT From the Kloth Meg jeans. They’re so stretchy, soft, and comfortable! There are lots of styles, and every colorway feels a bit different, so I’d go with what the reviews say. Generally, I size down to size 4 in these.

2. Leather Bag

A leather bag adds polish to any outfit and would be really useful to whoever you’re giving it to! If you’re not sure what the person’s style is, here are a few that are pretty versatile and universal.

This bucket bag would be a fantastic gift! I own it and love it! It goes with so much, from t-shirts + jeans to a skirt + blouse to work outfits. It’s available in both leather and suede.

Another option is this foldover crossbody bag that’s a little smaller and has a bit more hardware, which adds extra polish.

A much more expensive option is this suede tote, which is a stylish bag when you have a lot to carry.

I’ve rounded up more below. They’re all pretty affordable options, given that they are leather (besides the suede tote I linked above). Almost all of them come in multiple colorways, by the way!

3. Stylish Flats

Every wardrobe could use a pair of everyday, versatile, stylish flats. Even if flats are too dressy for you on most days, they’re helpful whenever you do need to dress up a bit above sneakers.

If you were to choose a pair of flats for a friend, Rothy’s are a good option. Rothy’s are well-known, and they’re unique. They’re made from recycled materials, and many styles are machine washable(!!). The upper of many styles are more like a stretchy knit, which is why so many people find them comfortable. Some styles that are really versatile are: The Square Mary Jane, The Point, and The Penny Loafer.

Another option that makes a great gift for someone who is redoing their wardrobe are these Madewell Flats. They’re really popular, they come in lots of styles, and they work great with t-shirts, sweaters, and blouses.

4. Belt

Belts are back in the spotlight (as I shared in my post 8 Fall Style Trends to Easily Update Outfits for 2025)! They are not only practical for holding up your pants, but they also “anchor” your outfits and add polish.

Below are some belts that are beautiful and can be worn in LOTS of outfits!

5. Graphic Print Tee or Sweatshirt

Graphic print tees add a big dose of personality and personal style to outfits, but they’re just as simple and as comfortable to wear as a plain t-shirt. A graphic print tee makes a great gift because there are so many options out there, and you can completely personalize it to whoever your recipient is.

For example, do they like books and cats? Try this books and cat tee! Or maybe you know someone who’d like this Harry Potter Herbology tee. If you know a boba lover (hi, me!), get them a boba tee.

6. Water-Resistant Boots (That Are Stylish)

Stylish, water-resistant boots are a must for cooler weather! For a wardrobe essential, I always look for boots that don’t have a lot of intricate designs so they can be worn with pretty much anything, as well as some that are water-resistant! There are so many stylish, water-resistant boots available these days, and a water repellent option makes getting dressed so much easier. You never have to worry about whether you have to change your footwear for rain!

One style of dressy boots that I love right now are these waterproof boots from Nordstrom. They seriously go with everything, and you can wear them rain or shine!

A more casual option that I have found to be very versatile are these lug sole boots. They are comfortable and work great with wide leg jeans, boyfriend jeans, and straight leg jeans. You can wear them with sweatshirts and sweaters for easy, casual outfits.

7. Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is the perfect piece to pair with anything that isn’t blue jeans: skirts, dresses, athleisure pants, and colored pants. Everything! You can go for a classic trucker style, like this one that Courtney highly recommends.

8. Everyday Earrings

A pair of everyday earrings is a small but super important detail to elevating your style. Accessories add polish to every outfit, and they’re so easy to gift! (See before and afters of outfits with and without accessories in my blog post Plain to Polished: Using Accessories to Pull Outfits Together.)

Here are hoops that are super affordable and work with everything, from everyday casual to work to athleisure. They are lightweight and don’t tarnish. I’ve worn them almost every day for a couple of years now, and they’re only just now showing wear.

Another option is this set of huggie hoops that also work with nearly everything.

Both pairs would be great to gift!

9. Lifestyle Sneakers

There are very, very few things that I say every person MUST have, and a stylish lifestyle sneaker is one of them. (The other would be a great pair of comfortable jeans!)

Lifestyle sneakers are a step up from athletic sneakers. These have a sleek, streamline profile. They’re what you would wear with ALL of your casual outfits that include jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and casual sweaters when you want to keep it super duper casual. Bonus points if you have a pair with a sleek enough design that you can also wear them with dresses and skirts.

Having a pair of great lifestyle sneakers will transform every single one of your casual outfits! I recommend starting with a white-based pair, as that will add a POP to every outfit. However, if that base is covered, go for the fun ones with prints and colors!

I’ve rounded up a ton of options below that will be great additions to anyone’s wardrobe:

There you have it! When someone’s ready to hit reset on their wardrobe, the right pieces can make a huge difference. I think of these gifts are more than just “things” — they’re tools to help her feel like the best version of herself every day.

Whether you gift her one standout item or curate a few to start her off strong, any of these pieces will support her in building a more intentional, sophisticated wardrobe she loves wearing!
