It’s the perfect time for a fresh start! If you’re in your 40s and your wardrobe just isn’t working anymore, you’re not imagining it — and you’re definitely not alone. I’ve seen a real shift this year among women in their 40s: style needs are changing, bodies are changing, and what used to work just doesn’t anymore.
Today I’m sharing wardrobe essentials for women in their 40s. These are the go-to items I recommend again and again to the women we coach. I want to spare you the noise and overload of too many “must-haves” and point you straight to the items that will work for you in this current stage of life. If you’re ready, let’s do it!
Why Wardrobe Essentials Matter in Your 40s
When your style needs start to shift, your wardrobe can quickly feel cluttered, confusing, or just off. That’s why it’s so helpful to step back, reset, and focus on the core pieces that truly serve you in this stage of life.
The right staples act as anchors in your closet. And having the right ones for being in your 40s is crucial. These staples give you an easy foundation of pieces that you know will serve and support your needs and that you can rely on time and time again. (For more on this, check out my blog post My Philosophy for Crafting a Wardrobe: Foundation and Flair Items.)
Wardrobe essentials help you mix and match more easily, dress for this current stage of life, and feel good in your clothes without trying too hard. They bring clarity to your closet — and confidence to your day!
SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
Wardrobe Essentials Every Woman In Their 40s Should Own
These are the wardrobe essentials that I recommend for women in their 40s, and I’ll tell you exactly why!

1. Structured but Stretchy Jeans
As we move through our 40s, many of us find that we need a bit more structure in our clothes to feel supported. Bodies change — we may find things have gotten softer, fluffier — and a good pair of jeans can help you feel held in and smoothed out in all the right places. At the same time, you don’t want clothes that are stiff. They need to be comfortable! So, jeans that balance structure with stretch are key.
For jeans that strike the perfect balance, I love jeans from Quince. They offer enough structure to feel secure and polished, but they’re still soft and stretchy enough to move with you comfortably.
The wide leg jeans in particular have worked really well for lots of PMTers. Though if you prefer, I really like the straight leg style as well. I wear these in size 6/28.

2. Jeans With a Stretchy Waistband
While I just said that jeans with structure and stretch are important, it’s also important to have SUPER comfortable jeans that have a stretchy waistband! With the amount of fluctuation, and sometimes uncontrollable health issues, we experience in our 40s and beyond, having pants with super stretchy and comfortable waistbands that can fluctuate with us is crucial.
If you’ve been around here for a while, you already know that Wit & Wisdom is hands-down my favorite brand of jeans. Why? Because they’re insanely comfortable AND they all have a stretchy, elastic waistband that keeps you comfortable all day long! I’m always SO relieved to have my Wit & Wisdom jeans on my bloated days. (But don’t get me wrong, I wear them much more often than just on my bloated days!)
While every pair has a stretchy waistband, some styles feel more stretchy and even softer than others. One of my favorite pairs lately has been this pair of trouser wide leg pants. They are SO SOFT and comfy and are what I reach for in the bloated days. My friend recently tried them and said, “They feel like sweatpants!” Find them HERE. I wear size 6.

3. Fuss-Free Sweaters
Once upon a time, I had no problem doing partial tucks with bulky sweaters. Those days are fewer, and now I don’t want to be bothered with fuss or bulk. I’ve heard this from plenty of women in their 40s as well — especially in light of those body changes and health fluctuations that I mentioned earlier. So, having sweaters that are short enough to not have to tuck is super helpful in this stage of life.
- This one from Target, which I’m wearing above. It’s SO soft, cozy, and warm.
- This one from Gap Factory, which I own in lots of colors.
- This one from Banana Republic Factory, which is unfortunately no longer available.
- This one from Quince, which I got last year and am wearing in black in the picture above, but it’s in regular rotation.
- This short sleeve striped one, which I’m wearing above and have had for a long time but found myself wearing a lot this year.

4. Lifestyle Sneakers
A great pair of lifestyle sneakers is KEY to looking polished and pulled together in casual outfits. Wear them with ALL of your casual outfits that include jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and casual sweaters. Bonus points if you have a pair with a sleek enough design that you can also wear them with dresses and skirts.
I recommend starting with a white-based pair, which will add a POP to every outfit. There are several styles to choose from, but the ones I recommend are:
- this pair with a gum sole — I’ve owned these for a long time and love them.
- this pair with black accents — I now own these too!
- a clean, all-white pair

5. Sleek Boots
Sleek boots are a must when you’re in your 40s. One dressy pair I highly recommend if you’re in your 40s is this this pair of waterproof boots from Nordstrom. They seriously go with everything, and you can wear them rain or shine! They completely level up all of your outfits with the sleek profile, versatile style, and square toe.
6. Leather Bag
A leather bag adds polish to every outfit and makes all of your outfits look better. This bucket bag is a PMT favorite and is the perfect balance of sophisticated but never overdressed.
Another option is this foldover crossbody bag that’s a little smaller and has a bit more hardware, which adds extra polish.
A much more expensive option is this suede tote, which is a stylish bag when you have a lot to carry.
I’ve rounded up more below. They’re all pretty affordable options, given that they are leather (besides the suede tote I linked above). Almost all of them come in multiple colorways, by the way.
7. Stylish Flats
Every wardrobe could use a pair of everyday, versatile, stylish flats. Even if flats are too dressy for you on most days, they’re helpful whenever you do need to dress up a bit above sneakers.
Rothy’s are a good option that are well-known and unique. They’re made from recycled materials, and many styles are machine washable(!!). The upper of many styles is more like a stretchy knit, which is why so many people find them comfortable. Some styles that are really versatile are: The Square Mary Jane, The Point, and The Penny Loafer.
Another option that is easy to wear every day and will make your outfits look good are these Madewell Flats. They’re really popular, they come in lots of styles, and they work great with t-shirts, sweaters, and blouses.

8. Denim Jacket
A denim jacket is the perfect piece to pair with anything that isn’t blue jeans: skirts, dresses, athleisure pants, and colored pants. Everything! You can go for a classic trucker style, like this one that Courtney highly recommends.
9. Everyday Earrings
A pair of everyday earrings is a small but super important detail to elevating your style. Accessories add polish to every outfit! (See before and afters of outfits with and without accessories in my blog post Plain to Polished: Using Accessories to Pull Outfits Together.)
Here are hoops that are super affordable and work with everything, from everyday casual to work to athleisure. They are lightweight and don’t tarnish. I’ve worn them almost every day for a couple of years now, and they’re only just now showing wear. Another option is this set of huggie hoops that also work with nearly everything.

10. Blouse
Every woman in her 40s needs at least one go-to blouse that can be pulled out when an outfit needs to look instantly polished. Whether it’s for a last-minute date night, a work meeting, or lunch with a friend, a great blouse does a lot of heavy lifting in your wardrobe.
Look for a blouse that’s elevated and has interesting details, a flattering neckline, and a fabric that doesn’t cling in the wrong places. The blouse I’m wearing above is a really good option that checks all the boxes. It has enough details to look polished while still being totally versatile. Look how effortlessly you can wear it with jeans for a date night look and with trousers for work! Find it HERE. I’m wearing size S.
For a short sleeve option, this blouse is one to try!

11. Sporty Pants
For super casual athleisure outfits, if you want a chic option besides leggings, get a pair of sporty pants. A lot of women say they feel sloppy in joggers, and if you feel the same, go for pants — in any cut, even joggers — made with a sporty fabric rather than sweatpants. If you make this switch, you’ll feel a thousand times better in athleisure.
If you prefer a different cut, pants like these are a great alternative to joggers that look sleek and offer more structure. (Remember how we talked about why that’s helpful in our 40s?) If you prefer wide leg cuts, go for pants like THESE and THESE.
