Earlier this week, I shared my Fall Wardrobe Essentials — the Foundations I rely on to make getting dressed easier all season long. Today, we’re getting to the FUN STUFF: the Flair!
If you’ve followed my Foundations + Flair method, you know Foundations are the cornerstone pieces that support your outfits, while Flair pieces add visual interest and keep them from feeling boring.
Once you have Foundations in place, you can freely add Flair! Today I’m sharing four types of Fall Wardrobe Additions I’m especially loving this season, along with pieces I’ve recently added or have my eye on.
Note: you do not need all of these. These are simply options to make your fall wardrobe feel more interesting, current, and fresh. Pick the types of Flair that feel like YOU — maybe that’s color, statement pants, prints, or special details and texture.
Here are some fun options for this fall!
SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
1. Printed Blouses
Printed blouses are one of the EASIEST ways to make an outfit more interesting because they do most of the work for you. Throw one on with your favorite jeans from your Fall Wardrobe Essentials, add neutral flats or boots, and you’ve got an outfit. Barely any thinking, and you’ll look really pulled together.
This fall I’m especially loving prints with burgundy in them. Burgundy is obviously not groundbreaking for fall 😆, but there are SO many pretty options out right now.

The one I’m wearing here — isn’t it PRETTY? It’s also really comfortable! The fabric has a sort of crinkled, smocked feel, which not only gives it an interesting texture, it also gives it some stretch to move with you. I personally love it for striking a great balance of dressy but not too sleek and dressy.
I also have my eye on THIS top or THIS top for the upcoming Fall Guide. (But as usual, you can use a top in any style and color you prefer. You can also use the long sleeve one I’m wearing above instead for a super easy swap that’s better for cooler weather.)

– Jeans (wearing size 28)
– Earrings (wearing 30mm)

2. Tops With Special Details
This category is great for ANY wardrobe, but I especially love it if you’re not huge on color or print. Your Flair doesn’t have to be loud! 😊
Look for interesting sleeves, texture, lace, an unexpected silhouette, buttons, or other special details. You can stick with your favorite neutral colors and still create outfits that have plenty of interest.

A few I’ve found recently:
Quince Puff Sleeve Top — effortless to wear but has puff sleeves and buttons for visual interest. I’ve already shown it here on the blog with barrel leg jeans (THESE) and olive green pants above.
Chocolate Brown Lace Tee – SO PRETTY!!! You get both a rich fall color AND texture with this one.
Cropped White Button-Up – Super popular style this fall, which is really nice if you hate tucking button up shirts. However, these can be kind of boxy. It’s the style these days, though! If you like the straight lines, no prob. If you don’t, and you prefer to counter the boxiness, go for pants that open up a little more at the bottom, like flares, palazzo jeans, or barrel leg pants. I’m wearing it above with palazzo jeans! There’s a slightly longer one HERE as well.
Pom Trim Blouse – This will be SO GOOD through the holidays and through winter for date nights, holiday events, and work looks. Incredibly affordable, too!
Ruffle Neck Chambray Shirt – Or a top like this that offers even more than your standard chambray shirt.
These kinds of pieces are SO useful because they’re almost as easy to style as a basic. Throw one on with jeans and simple shoes, but instead of the outfit feeling like “just jeans and a shirt,” the special details give it a little something extra. Or, pair one with statement pants (see #4 below), and have a standout outfit!

3. Tops in Fresh Colors for This Fall

Another really simple way to add Flair is through COLOR. There are lots of rich colors out right now, including burgundy and berry tones, chocolate brown, cobalt blue, red, and some fun yellow-green/chartreuse shades.
One color I probably never would have tried before but now feel 100% confident wearing thanks to my color analysis is the yellow-green/chartreuse color. I’ve seen it a lot on various stores this season, and I LOVE IT!
I recently got THIS SWEATER and love the easygoing fit — it’s effortless to wear. And I absolutely adore the color! It’s available in other colors too, and I showed it in black in my Fall Wardrobe Essentials post.
If you’re looking to add more color to your fall wardrobe, you could also try:
- This popular sweater in blue or in bright red (toggle to the “Garment Dye” button for red). These are both in my cart!
- My sweater in chartreuse
- THIS cardigan in red, blue, or chartreuse
- THIS blouse in berry
- Courtney says THIS cardigan is really good
You definitely don’t need to suddenly start wearing a bunch of colors you don’t like. But if there’s a color you’ve been drawn to lately, a top is an EASY way to work it into your wardrobe. Pair it with your favorite jeans, neutral pants, or even one of the neutral jackets from my Fall Essentials post and let the color be the interesting part of the outfit.

4. Statement Pants
I LOVE STATEMENT PANTS!! 🙌 Fun silhouettes, prints, colors — I love them all.
But, if statement pants intimidate you a little, remember that you don’t need to make the entire outfit a statement. This is where those Foundations REALLY come in handy.
Pair fun pants with a neutral tee or sweater and your lifestyle sneakers or neutral flats. DONE. The pants provide the Flair, and everything else can be super simple.
Here are a few to refresh your wardrobe for this fall:

Olive Pants
Honestly, they’re really a neutral at this point, but they’re technically a color, so we’ll count ’em. 😉
If you’re looking for an updated pair of olive pants, THESE from Spanx are pricey (first outfit above), but they’re REALLY good quality. The fabric is thick and supportive while still being SO stretchy, soft, and comfortable, and they look really polished. Available in regular, petite, plus, and tall, HERE. I’m wearing size M.
Another olive pants option is THIS PAIR from J.Crew Factory. (Second pic above.) These are lighter weight and are also very stretchy, but they don’t lose shape — they stay looking polished. Huge fan-favorite!! The color looks a tad muddier on the site than they do in person — I tried to edit my pics to represent the green better. Slightly darker and slightly warmer than the Spanx pair. They come in lots of colors. I wear size 28.

Burgundy Pants

These burgundy pants are similar to the ones I shared during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, except they cost WAY LESS! They’re comfy, easy to wear, and I actually think they work even better around curvy hips. I’m wearing size S.
(I’m wearing the more affordable Old Navy pair in the first outfit and the Nordstrom pair in the second outfit.)
Pair them with a neutral sweater and flats, or keep things casual with a neutral tee and lifestyle sneakers.

– Earrings (wearing 30mm)

Striped Pants

This striped pant style is also around quite a bit this season, and this pair is great! These pants feel like soft denim but read like pants that you can definitely wear to work. Best of both worlds!

There’s also a pair of striped barrel leg pants that are just FUN! Barrel legs obviously aren’t going to be everyone’s thing, and that’s okay! If you like playing with different silhouettes, though, this is a fun way to change up an otherwise really simple outfit.
Shop Outfit #1:
– Tee (wearing size S)
– Pants (wearing size 6)
– Shoes (wearing size 9 — very comfy)
– Necklace (use code TAKE20 for 20% off)
– Earrings (wearing 30mm)
Statement Silhouettes

Regardless of color or print, silhouettes also make a huge impact! I mentioned in my Fall Essentials post that I’m also loving more width, like palazzo jeans, or just extra wide jeans in general. You can also wear barrel legs instead — anything to create variety from standard straighter cuts.
My palazzo jeans arrived from Quince! (Second outfit above with the leopard print top.) They fit just like the standard Bella Wide Leg jeans through the seat and hips, and the part below the knee is slightly wider. On me, because I have curvier hips and fuller thighs, it’s a subtle difference, but it is enough to add some curve and movement to outfits that I feel can look straight and boxy otherwise.
Because the silhouette itself is the interesting part, you don’t need to do much with the rest of the outfit. Add a fitted neutral tee or simple sweater and your favorite shoes, and let the jeans do the work!
How to wear statement pants: This is where your Fall Essentials come in. Pair them with a white, black, or other neutral top, and you’ve just created an outfit that looks stylish — with almost no thought at all!
If you want to get extra stylish, pair colored pants with a printed top that includes the color of your pants. (How I’m wearing the burgundy pants with a printed top that has burgundy on it above.) If your pants are printed, wear a top in the same color as a color from the print. This style strategy is called color pulling, and it’s the easiest way to pull together outfits with printed pieces.

Add the Kind of Flair That Feels Like YOU
And there you go—the Fall Wardrobe Additions I’m especially drawn to this year!
Remember, the goal is NOT to look at this post and think you need printed blouses AND colorful tops AND special details AND statement pants.
Start with the Foundations we talked about earlier this week. Then think about what kind of Flair actually makes you excited to get dressed.
Choose a couple of things that add interest to the Foundations you already own, and you’ll have tons of ways to mix and match them into outfits this fall.
