Butter yellow is everywhere right now, and it’s such a wearable trend! It’s also one that can last in your closet beyond this season. But once you bring it into your closet, the next question is: what color goes with butter yellow?
The good news is: a lot of colors do!
Why Butter Yellow Is So Easy to Style
Butter yellow works with plenty of colors. The key to making it look cohesive? Choosing the right tone.
Butter yellow is a soft, pale yellow that’s been lightened with white. So if you want the easiest, most cohesive outfits, pair butter yellow with colors that have that same softened or lighter quality.
When the tones match, your outfits come together effortlessly.
Let’s break down the best butter yellow color combinations. I’ll share my favorite colors that go with butter yellow, along with outfit ideas so you can see how it all works in real life.
What Colors Go With Butter Yellow?
Butter yellow pairs best with colors that are:
- Slightly softened or lighter
- Not overly saturated or muddy
- Light to medium in depth
Because of this, butter yellow mixes easily with both soft colors and classic neutrals.
Below are the best butter yellow color combinations to start with.
The Best Neutral Colors to Wear With Butter Yellow
Before we get into more colorful pairings, let’s start with neutrals.
These are the easiest, most versatile options to wear with butter yellow:
- Whites and creams
- Light gray and medium gray
- Black (when balanced intentionally)
- Light wash denim
- Medium wash denim
- Dark wash denim
- Light tan and nude
- Silver
- Gold
- Navy
- Light olive
If you build outfits around these neutrals, butter yellow will blend in seamlessly with your wardrobe.
Colors That Go With Butter Yellow
Now that we’ve covered the easiest neutral pairings, let’s look at color.
One of the best things about butter yellow is how many colors it works with — as long as you keep the tone consistent. Since butter yellow is softened with white, it pairs best with colors that are also slightly softened or muted.
Here are some colors that work beautifully with butter yellow:
- Aqua
- Light pink
- Soft olive green
- Sage green
- Light blue
- Soft lavender and light purple
- Light coral or peach
You don’t need to build full outfits around these colors, either. Even small accents like earrings, a necklace, shoes, or a bag can bring them in in a really wearable way.
How to Wear Butter Yellow: Outfit Ideas
Let’s see some of these color combos in outfits!
I don’t own a full butter yellow wardrobe, and you don’t need one either. All of these outfits use the same butter yellow sweater styled in different ways with pieces I already own.
This is where those color combinations mentioned above really come to life and where you can start to see how small changes, like swapping accessories or bottoms, can completely change the feel of an outfit.
SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
About My Butter Yellow Sweater
Before we get to the outfits, I’ll be featuring my butter yellow sweater. Of course, you don’t have to own this sweater — we’re talking about color combos, which can be applied to any butter yellow piece.
But, if you’re interested in this sweater, it’s SUPER soft. I love the slightly oversized fit, which feels very fresh and current. I also love that it’s short enough that you don’t have to tuck it, which allows you to look polished without having to fuss with your clothes all day!
This sweater comes in several colors (I own three, lol). See them all HERE. If that link has delayed shipping or limited colors, the sweater is also available HERE. I sized down to XS as this runs a bit big. Size S also fit, but it was even more relaxed, and I found that size slightly harder to pair with wide leg pants.
Now, on to my favorite colors to wear with butter yellow!
Butter Yellow + Aqua

Aqua is such a fun and unexpected color to pair with butter yellow. It’s probably my favorite color combo with yellow. I LOOOOOVE it!
Because butter yellow is soft and pale, the best version of aqua to wear with it is also slightly softened — not overly bright or neon.
This combination feels fresh and springy without being overwhelming.
In this outfit, I paired my butter yellow sweater with these wide leg pants (similar) and tan flats, then added aqua earrings (see similar ones HERE) for a subtle pop of color. That small detail adds interest without taking over the outfit. Love!!
Butter Yellow + Light Pink

Light pink is another beautiful option with butter yellow.
It adds a soft contrast while still feeling cohesive — especially when you avoid brighter shades like hot pink and instead go for something lighter and slightly muted.
I styled the butter yellow sweater with straight leg jeans and tan flats — and swapped in these soft pink earrings. You can play around and pick your favorite combo!
Butter Yellow + Olive Green

Olive green can absolutely work with butter yellow — you just have to choose the right version.
I recommend avoiding muddy or overly dark olives and instead go for a softer, slightly muted green for a more streamlined look.
In this outfit, I paired my butter yellow sweater with a soft olive utility jacket, medium wash slim straight jeans, and tan flats.
I added a rainbow beaded necklace, which brings in a mix of colors that all work with the yellow. It’s a great example of how multiple colors can coexist in one outfit when they share a similar softness.
By the way, this necklace is SOOOO affordable and adds a really fun pop to outfits! These necklaces are trending right now, so it’s great to be able to play with a trend without spending much money. An easy, low-cost way to freshen up outfits! Find it HERE. I’m wearing the colorway “colorful-06.”

Butter Yellow + Light to Medium Wash Denim
Denim is one of the easiest ways to wear butter yellow.
Butter yellow looks especially cohesive with lighter washes of denim. The softness of both colors works together naturally.
In the outfits above with the pink earrings and with the colorful beaded necklace, I paired my sweater with medium wash straight leg jeans and tan flats, plus these accessories for a little extra interest.
By the way, these are the Quince straight leg jeans, which you know I’ve had for a while. They’re STRETCHY and soft and come in lots of washes and a variety of sizing. Find them HERE. I’m wearing size 6/28.
Dark Wash Denim

Dark denim also works and creates a sharper contrast and adds depth.
These are the same jeans as the ones from the light wash denim outfit, just in the darker wash. Find them HERE.
Butter Yellow + Gray

Gray is one of the most underrated colors to wear with butter yellow.
Light to medium gray tones feel calm, refined, and very cohesive with the softness of the yellow.
In this outfit, I paired my sweater with gray wide leg trousers and nude pumps. The result is simple, but it looks polished and intentional.
These trousers are SO STRETCHY and COMFY, but look polished all day. They come in several other colors and in straight, petite, plus, and tall sizes. Check them out HERE. I’m wearing size 6.
Butter Yellow + Black (How to Make It Work)

Even though butter yellow pairs most easily with lighter tones, black can absolutely work too.
The key is balance.
Instead of having one isolated black piece, anchor the outfit by repeating black — especially on the bottom half.
In this outfit, I styled the sweater with black wide leg trousers and black pumps. Keeping the entire lower half black makes the look feel streamlined instead of disjointed.
The fact that the shoes show a bit of the top of the foot also helps lighten the look and keeps it from feeling too heavy.
Leopard print shoes would also work here since they incorporate black while adding warmth and interest.
Butter Yellow + Green

This green is slightly warmer than ideal for butter yellow, but it still works!
In this outfit, I paired my sweater with green pants and tan flats, then added the rainbow beaded necklace to tie everything together. These pants are no longer available in this color, but you can look at other colors HERE.
The necklace helps bridge the gap between the colors by incorporating both softer and deeper tones, making the outfit feel cohesive overall.
This is a great reminder that your outfits don’t have to be perfect — small details can help pull everything together.
