Spring is approaching, but if the temperatures are still cool and you’re wondering how to dress for spring when it’s still cold, I’ve got you. Early spring weather can feel confusing — even frustrating. You’re ready to leave behind the heaviness of winter and step into lighter, fresher outfits, but in so many places, you still need real warmth!
The good news? You can have both.
The key to creating spring outfits for cold weather is simple: lighten the look of your outfit without sacrificing warmth. With a few strategic swaps and smart layering, you can build early spring outfits that feel fresh and polished but are still totally practical.
Here are five ways to do it!
SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
1. Wear Warm Sweaters in Lighter Colors for Cold Spring Days
Yes — you can still wear sweaters in early spring. You probably need to!
If you’re tired of heavy winter outfits, the easiest way to transition your wardrobe is to choose warm sweaters in lighter colors or cute spring prints. Think colors like light grey, soft white, pale blue, blush pink, colorful stripes, heart prints, etc. The colors and prints brighten your outfits instantly, even if the fabric is just as cozy and warm as your winter sweaters.

For example, a chunky cable knit in light grey feels much more “spring” than the same sweater in charcoal. It’s still warm, but it just looks lighter.
This is one of the simplest ways to create transitional spring outfits without freezing!

2. Layer a Spring Print Top + Thick Cardigan
If you’re ready to pull out your spring tops but it’s still chilly, layering is your best friend. Grab that spring top, like your favorite striped tee, floral print long sleeve top, or fun abstract print long sleeve blouse and pair it with a thick, warm cardigan.

For example, here I’m wearing a red and white striped long sleeve tee, which looks light and springy. But the cardigan I’m wearing with it is super warm and cozy!
This is actually the same formula I use in the winter (long sleeve tee + warm cardigan) but in colors that feel more like spring. The red and white striped tee layered under a thick red cardigan gives you a fresh, spring feel while still keeping you warm enough for cool days.
This is one of the easiest cold spring outfit ideas because you’re combining visual lightness with actual, practical warmth.

3. Remember Your Base Layers for Early Spring
If it’s truly cold, base layers make a huge difference. You know I’m a BIG advocate for wearing HEATTECH under your tops! The HEATTECH I wear is a super thin layer that traps warmth but is also moisture-wicking. It’s thin and doesn’t add bulk, but it so effective. I also love that this brand in particular is designed to stay hidden under your clothes with intentionally shorter sleeves. I also usually wear the scoop neck ones so they’re not easily seen under tops with an open neckline. The one I wear is HERE. I size up to M because they run a little small, plus they’re fitted, and I don’t want to be squeezed all day.
A thin layer like this allows you to wear all sorts of tops and feel warmer. And, if you want to be even warmer, add a regular long sleeve tee over it, and THEN add your blouse or sweater on top. The additional long sleeve tee really, REALLY traps in that warmth so much more than just the HEATTECH alone.
4. Choose Thicker Denim for Cold Spring Weather
Not all jeans are created equal! Some denim is lightweight and great for summer, like my super-duper comfortable Wit & Wisdom Whitney jeans (which I highly recommend for later in the spring, the summer, and the warmer parts of fall!). But when it’s still cold out, thicker denim truly helps you stay warmer.
Save your thin, lightweight jeans for warmer days. On colder spring days, opt for jeans with more structure and weight. (I’ve been wearing THESE from Quince nonstop. They’re perfectly structured but also soooo comfortable!) It might seem small, but every little bit helps when dressing for unpredictable weather.
Also, if you’re wearing wide leg jeans, make sure they fit well and feel balanced. These posts will help:
5. Swap Heavy Boots for Lighter Footwear (If Possible)
If it’s snowy or truly freezing where you live, obviously wear the boots. Practicality wins. But if you can, swapping heavy winter boots for sneakers or flats instantly makes your outfit feel more spring-ready.
Even better? Choose colored sneakers! 😍 That pop of color on your feet with brighten your whole outfit and add even MORE spring vibes! This small shift makes a BIG difference in spring outfits for cold weather.
Can’t choose a color? Green sneakers are trending this spring, but red and yellow are also great options!
3 Easy Cold Spring Outfit Formulas
If you want some simple formulas to follow so you can easily dress like it’s spring even when it’s cold, here are three you can copy with pieces from your own closet.
1. Light Sweater + Light to Medium Wash Jeans + Sneakers or Flats

A light-colored sweater keeps the entire palette feeling lighter, even if your pieces are thick and warm. You can absolutely wear dark jeans. But if your outfit still feels too “winter,” try a light to medium wash jean to brighten everything up.
For shoes:
- Sneakers or flats keep things lighter than boots. But if you need to wear boots, of course, do that.
- Consider wearing colored sneakers add a fresh pop!
This is one of the easiest early spring outfit ideas to repeat all season.
2. Spring Print Top + Thick Cardigan

Pull out your stripes, florals, or other fresh prints and layer them with a substantial cardigan. You get a spring color or print paired with warmth! You can do this with tons of different tops and cardigans for endless outfits.

Here’s another example of the same formula with a floral print top and cozy cardigan.

This is another example of the same formula, this time using a top that doesn’t have that typical spring feel — it’s not floral print; it’s a vertical striped button up. The white background “lifts” and brightens the whole outfit a bit, which is great for early spring.
3. Blouse + Base Layer + Structured Jacket

Start with warmth underneath — a MUST. Then add:
- A blouse or elevated casual top
- A structured jacket on top
Great structured jacket options for early spring include:
- Cropped wool coats
- Trench coats
- Bomber jackets
- Quilted bomber jackets (especially warm!)
These layers create polish and structure while keeping you warm.
